What Is SMTP?<\/h3>\n<p><b>SMTP<\/b> (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a protocol used to send emails over the internet. It\u2019s used by most email software to send <b>outgoing<\/b> mail via an outgoing mail server (SMTP server).<\/p>\n<p>SMTP works with a Mail Transfer Agent (known as the SMTP relay) to ensure your emails are sent to the <b>correct<\/b> mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>The protocol is used to send emails between <b>SMTP<\/b><b> clients<\/b> (the email program you use) and <b>SMTP<\/b> <b>mail<\/b><b> servers<\/b> (it moves from one server to the next until the destination is reached).<\/p>\n<p><b>But what is an <\/b><b>SMTP<\/b> <b>mail server<\/b><b>?<br \/>\n<\/b>Any computer running SMTP is an SMTP mail server!<\/p>\n<p>They ensure that the emails take the correct route to reach the intended recipient\u2019s email program or email application.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Note:<\/i><\/b><i> Since SMTP works without <\/i><i>authentication<\/i><i> and does not use an <\/i><i>encrypted connection<\/i><i>, you can ensure <\/i><i>account security<\/i><i> by using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) for SMTP connections.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>2. How Does SMTP Work?<\/h3>\n<p>SMTP works with a <b>set of codes and commands<\/b> that make the entire process of sending emails much easier.<\/p>\n<p>Each time you send an email to a full email address, it\u2019s transferred via several SMTP relay systems and Yahoo servers until it reaches its final destination \u2014 which, in this case, is your recipient\u2019s inbox.<\/p>\n<p>However, SMTP can only transmit text!<\/p>\n<p><b>So how are my attachments sent?<br \/>\n<\/b>To help you send attachments along with your email text, the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension (MIME) protocol is used. MIME encodes all the non-text data into the text format before it is transferred across SMTP relay servers.<\/p>\n<h3>3. What Are POP and IMAP?<\/h3>\n<p>Like SMTP, POP and IMAP are also protocols used to transfer emails across the internet.<\/p>\n<p>POP is short for <b>Post Office Protocol<\/b>, and IMAP refers to<b> Internet Message Access Protocol<\/b>. These protocols are used to <b>receive <\/b><b>incoming mail<\/b> from an incoming mail server (like the Yahoo server) to the recipient\u2019s computer.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at each protocol:<\/p>\n<h4>a. POP3<\/h4>\n<p>POP3 is the third version of the Post Office Protocol \u2014 which is used to receive incoming mail.<\/p>\n<p>A POP server <b>downloads<\/b> incoming mail and stores it locally on your device. This way, you don\u2019t have to be online and access the email server whenever you want to check your email.<\/p>\n<p>You can configure POP3 with any computer and app to make access through multiple devices easier.<\/p>\n<h4>b. IMAP<\/h4>\n<p>Like POP3, Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) is another protocol used to receive emails.<\/p>\n<p><b>How is <\/b><b>IMAP<\/b><b> different from POP?<br \/>\n<\/b>The main difference between POP and IMAP is that an IMAP account <b>stores<\/b> all its mail on the email server instead of downloading your emails. While this allows easy access, you need to have a reliable internet connection to use an IMAP account effectively.<\/p>\n<p>As IMAP is a form of cloud storage on your incoming mail server, it\u2019s much faster and more efficient than POP3.<\/p>\n<h3>4.
