It lets you set up meetings, chat with team members, create to-do lists, and more.<\/p>\n<p>But can you send text messages from Gmail?<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll describe <a href=\"#How\">the old and new methods<\/a> you can use to send text messages directly from Gmail.<\/p>\n<h2>This Article Contains:<\/h2>\n<p>(Click on a link to jump to that specific section.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#Method1\">Old method: Using the Mobile Service Provider\u2019s SMS Gateway<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#Method2\">New method: Using a Third-Party Service<\/a><a href=\"#How\">How to Send a Text from Gmail<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s jump right into it.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Send a Text from Gmail<\/h2>\n<p>Gmail used to have a straightforward process for sending a text message using your Gmail address.<\/p>\n<p>Under the <em>Labs<\/em> tab in Gmail <em>Settings<\/em>, you could enable Text Messaging (SMS) in Gmail Chat.<\/p>\n<p>But that was back in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no more<em> Labs<\/em> tab today (it\u2019s been renamed <em>Advanced<\/em>), and the text messaging feature that used Gmail\u2019s chat window has been removed.<\/p>\n<p><em>So how do you send a text from Gmail now?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll describe <strong>three<\/strong> other methods you can use today send text messages through Gmail:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#Method1\">Old Method: Using a Mobile Service Provider\u2019s SMS Gateway<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#Method2\">New method: Using a Third-Party Service<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For each method, I\u2019ll cover the step-by-step process and also highlight its limitations.<\/p>\n<h2>Old Method: Using a Mobile Service Provider\u2019s SMS Gateway<\/h2>\n<p><strong>SMS<\/strong> (Short Message Service)<strong> gateways<\/strong> enable a computer to send an SMS message to a telecommunications network (for example, Verizon, AT&amp;T, etc.).<\/p>\n<p>These gateways take a message sent through an email client like Gmail and route it to a mobile network. The mobile network, in turn, delivers the message to the recipient.<\/p>\n<p>But here&#8217;s the problem. Starting in 2024 and through 2025, the carriers all killed their gateways. <a href=\"https:\/\/text.email\/blog\/verizon-email-to-text.html\">Verizon&#8217;s email to text<\/a> through vtext.com, <a href=\"https:\/\/text.email\/blog\/att-email-to-text.html\">AT&amp;T&#8217;s email to text<\/a> through txt.att.net, <a href=\"https:\/\/text.email\/blog\/tmobile-email-to-text.html\">T-Mobile&#8217;s email to text<\/a> through tmomail.net, and all the other carriers too (Boost Mobile, Cricket, U.S. Cellular) \u2014 all gone.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_14024\">\n<dt>\n<h3><strong>Why did the carriers all shut down their gateways?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are three main reasons. One is spammers ran wild on these. Two is the result of spammers running wild: New regulations came about that require special compliance for any applications sending texts. And three is there&#8217;s not a huge financial incentive for the carriers to bring back their system.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, there are alternatives.<\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<h2>New Method: Using a Third-Party Service<\/h2>\n<p>If you were using one of the old carrier methods and you REALLY need to get your <a href=\"https:\/\/text.email\/blog\/email-to-sms.html\">email-to-SMS alerts<\/a> back for things like server notifications or backup failures, there&#8217;s one drop-in replacement.<\/p>\n<h3>Sending text alerts (a drop-in replacement for the old carrier gateways)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/text.email\"><strong>text.email<\/strong><\/a> is a true replacement for the carrier gateways. (Or, in your server or device settings, go to the area where you set the email address for alerts.)<\/li>\n<li>Compose a text to yournumber@yoursecretkeyword.text.email<\/li>\n<li>Type in your message and hit Send.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Limitations<\/h4>\n<p>There&#8217;s really only one limitation here: text.email is for alerts and crucial messages to individuals (or small teams) only. It&#8217;s not meant for marketing texts, appointment reminders, or any other B2C purpose.<\/p>\n<h3>Sending bulk or marketing texts<\/h3>\n<p>If you have an extensive mailing list, remembering each recipient\u2019s SMS gateway is nearly impossible. And as I mentioned before, some mobile network providers don\u2019t even offer an SMS or MMS gateway.<\/p>\n<p>In such scenarios, you can opt for <strong>third-party email-to-SMS services<\/strong> that help you send bulk text messages from Gmail.<\/p>\n<p>One such texting service is <strong>TextMagic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>TextMagic helps you send SMS texts via email, have online conversations, and more.
