While the <strong>Skip Weekends<\/strong> checkbox under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/new-feature-schedule-mass-emails\/\">Scheduling<\/a> section may look simple, its underlying functionality is actually quite complex. <em>What is a weekend?<\/em> A weekend is <strong>12:00 AM Saturday to 11:59 PM Sunday,<\/strong> based on <em>your computer&#8217;s local time<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1811\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1811\" style=\"width: 720px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mail-Merge-Skip-Weekends-1.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1811 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mail-Merge-Skip-Weekends-1-820x1024.gif\" alt=\"Skip Weekends\" width=\"720\" height=\"899\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mail-Merge-Skip-Weekends-1-820x1024.gif 820w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mail-Merge-Skip-Weekends-1-240x300.gif 240w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/Mail-Merge-Skip-Weekends-1-768x959.gif 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">By checking &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221;, no emails will be sent on a weekend. The auto follow-up Stages will count based on business days (Mon-Fri) rather than all days.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; setting applies under the following scenarios:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;re sending an email campaign where you use the &#8220;spread out&#8221; feature to send only a certain number of emails\/day. With &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; on, the campaign would only send Monday through Friday.<\/li>\n<li>You have a long-running campaign, sending 24 hours\/day. As soon as it becomes Saturday, by your chosen time zone, the campaign will pause and resume sending on Monday morning at 8:00 AM by your chosen time zone. Your &#8220;chosen&#8221; time zone is your computer&#8217;s local time zone unless you manually changed the time zone offset in the Scheduling Date\/Time field.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re sending an email campaign that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/new-feature-recurring-automated-email-campaigns-with-gmail-and-google-sheets\/\">recurs daily or hourly, based on new rows found in your Google Sheet<\/a>. With &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; on, the campaign wouldn&#8217;t check for new spreadsheet rows\u00a0during the weekend.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re sending a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/recurring-reminder-emails\/\">reminder email campaign<\/a> every month on the 1st of the month. With &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; on, if the 1st of a month falls on a weekend, the email will be sent the following Monday instead.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ve configured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/new-feature-automatic-follow-up-emails-until-you-get-a-reply\/\">auto follow-up emails<\/a> and set your various <strong>Stage 1<\/strong>, <strong>Stage 2<\/strong>, and\u00a0other Stage&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Days<\/strong>. With &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; on, it is assumed that the\u00a0number of <strong>Days<\/strong> set for the various <strong>Stages<\/strong> are &#8220;business&#8221; days. Meaning, if you launch a campaign on Wednesday, and set <strong>Stage1=3 Days<\/strong>, then that means 3 &#8220;business&#8221; days, so <strong>Stage 1<\/strong> will send on Monday.<\/li>\n<li>If your campaign unexpectedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/gmail-reached-a-limit-bounces-how-to-avoid\/\">exceeds your Gmail account limits<\/a> and starts generating Gmail&#8217;s &#8220;You have reached a sending limit&#8221; bounces, GMass detects that and pauses your campaign. Normally your campaign is paused for four hours. With &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; on, if four hours later\u00a0is a\u00a0weekend, then the campaign is pushed back to <strong>Monday morning at 8am<\/strong>, your <em>local<\/em> time.<\/li>\n<li>You send an email campaign right now, and it happens to be the weekend. With &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; on, your mail merge would send at the same time on the following <strong>Monday<\/strong> instead of right now.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Practically speaking&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Practically speaking, why would you want to use the &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; setting? Generally, it&#8217;s because you want your recipients to get your email when they&#8217;re most likely to be working, and then they&#8217;d expect you to be working. Specifically, with each scenario described above:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you&#8217;ve intentionally spread out your campaign to send only a certain number of emails\/day, you may wish to skip the weekends so that your recipients get their emails only when they&#8217;re likely to be working.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using auto follow-up emails, it&#8217;s more likely your recipients will believe the follow-up is a manually typed out email just to them if it&#8217;s on a weekday rather than on the weekend.<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re\u00a0setting up\u00a0a daily recurring mail merge campaign tied to a spreadsheet, you may want to be able to add rows to your spreadsheet on Saturday and Sunday but not have those emails send\u00a0until the following Monday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Timing\u00a0Examples<\/h3>\n<p>Here is how the timing works when <strong>Skip Weekends<\/strong> is checked:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you send a campaign during the course of a weekend, it will instead send on the <strong>following Monday at the same time<\/strong>. For example, let&#8217;s say it&#8217;s Saturday at 3pm your local time. You send a campaign &#8220;now&#8221; but with &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; checked. It would not send until Monday at 3pm your local time.<\/li>\n<li>With auto follow-ups, the <strong>Days<\/strong> you set for the various <strong>Stages<\/strong> are counted as business days, meaning <em>Monday through Friday<\/em> only. If you start a campaign on Wednesday at 11am, and set your Stage 1 auto follow-up to go in <strong>4 Days<\/strong>, the <strong>Stage 1<\/strong> follow-up would send on Tuesday at 11am, since Tuesday is four &#8220;business&#8221; days after Wednesday.<\/li>\n<li>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/new-feature-recurring-automated-email-campaigns-with-gmail-and-google-sheets\/\">automated recurring campaigns<\/a>, if the campaign is set to repeat <strong>daily<\/strong> to new rows found in a Google Sheet, then the campaign sends <strong>Monday to Friday<\/strong> at the <strong>same time<\/strong>, to new email addresses found in the spreadsheet. If the campaign is set to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/check-spreadsheet-hourly-new-addresses-send-email-sequence\/\">repeat hourly<\/a>, then the campaign would check for new spreadsheet rows and send <strong>during the 11pm hour on Friday night<\/strong>, and then <strong>resume checking the spreadsheet and sending on Monday<\/strong> right after midnight strikes.<\/li>\n<li>GMass pauses your campaign when it detects that it&#8217;s bouncing because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/understanding-gmails-email-sending-limits\/\">you&#8217;ve exceeded your sending limits<\/a>. If a batch of emails is sending at Friday at 10pm at night, and GMass detects &#8220;over limits&#8221; bounces, then the campaign would resume sending at Monday at 8am. We&#8217;ve chosen Monday at 8am specifically for these scenarios, rather than\u00a0the stroke of midnight on Monday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Other things to know<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Remember, a weekend is defined by your computer&#8217;s local time, not GMT time.\u00a0Some reports and notifications in\u00a0GMass are shown in GMT time, but weekends are defined by your local time.<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;Skip Weekends&#8221; setting\u00a0<em>sticks<\/em>, meaning if you set it for one campaign, the box will be automatically checked the next time you launch a <strong>Compose<\/strong> window.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Skip weekends&#8221; can sometimes cause confusion with the timing of auto follow-ups, especially in recurring campaigns. You can always check when follow-ups are scheduled for a campaign and who will receive them with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/auto-follow-up-emails-until-reply\/#calendarview\">calendar view<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When scheduling multi-day mail merge campaigns, you can now choose to skip the weekends.
