Before we dive in, we\u2019ll assume you\u2019re familiar with GMass and already have the Chrome extension running in your browser. If not,\u00a0download GMass from the Chrome Web Store<\/a>\u00a0(it\u2019s free to get started) and connect your Gmail or Google Workspace account.<\/p>\nCreating the poll in GMass<\/h3>\n
First up:\u00a0Create your email campaign as you normally would<\/b>\u00a0in GMass. You don\u2019t need to do anything special in the initial campaign setup process to add a poll.<\/p>\n

To see your poll reporting in the dashboard or web-based report, click<\/strong> on the number underneath \u201cPolls\u201d<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s updated immediately whenever someone votes.<\/p>\nHere\u2019s where to click if you\u2019re looking at reporting in the dashboard:<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\nMuch like the other reporting columns GMass adds to your Google Sheets (OPENED, CLICKED, and so on), if you use the same sheet in multiple campaigns, those columns\u00a0can<\/em> get overwritten.<\/p>\nPOLL_ANSWER works the same. So if you use this same Google Sheet to run two campaigns with two different polls, the second campaign’s results will overwrite the first campaign’s results<\/strong>. You can always see the past results by using Google Sheets’ “History” feature.<\/p>\nCreating a landing page after someone takes the poll<\/h3>\n
By default, when votes in a poll in your email, they’re redirected to a basic thank you page on the gpolls domain.<\/p>\n

Now that I\u2019ve covered the basics of setting up a poll in GMass and monitoring the results, I\u2019ll cover a few more advanced things you can with this feature. And yes, I fully recognize these are \u201csimple polls\u201d so discussing advanced techniques is contradictory. Let\u2019s just roll with it.<\/p>\n
Auto follow-ups to people who haven\u2019t taken the poll<\/h3>\n
There\u2019s a reason you\u2019re sending out a poll: You want people to respond to it.<\/p>\n
With GMass\u2019s\u00a0auto follow-ups<\/b>\u00a0feature you can\u00a0stay on email recipients who don\u2019t vote \u2014 and continue nudging them until they do<\/b>.<\/p>\n
When you\u2019re setting up your email with the poll, head to the settings box and open the\u00a0Auto Follow-up<\/a>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n![\"Auto](\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/polls-autofollowsection-tinified.png\")
<\/a><\/p>\nCheck the box under Stage 1, then set the follow-up to go out If\u00a0No Click<\/code>\u00a0after\u00a03<\/code>\u00a0days. (You can set the number of days to whatever timeframe you want.)<\/p>\nNow\u00a0your auto follow-up will go out to anyone who doesn\u2019t click<\/b>\u00a0(and, thereby, vote) on the email. However, you\u2019ll need to make sure there aren\u2019t any other links in the email \u2014 as clicks on those will still count as clicks.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\nYou can set unlimited stages of auto follow-ups. If someone hasn\u2019t voted on your poll after 157 total emails\u2026 they\u2019re not going to, and you\u2019ve more or less done all you could.<\/p>\n
Once you\u2019ve set up your follow-ups, you can\u00a0test the entire sequence<\/b>\u00a0by scrolling to the top of the settings box and clicking the arrow next to the Send Test button. <\/a><\/p>\nClick the Send Test button and you\u2019ll get a test email featuring your first message along with all of its follow-ups.<\/p>\n
And if all looks good, send the first email in the campaign by clicking the red GMass button.<\/p>\n
Styling the poll options as buttons<\/h3>\n
These are simple polls and they look simple. But they don\u2019t have to look\u00a0that<\/i>\u00a0simple.<\/p>\n
GMass gives you the\u00a0capabilities to edit the HTML of your emails<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 which means you can\u00a0add some styling to your poll options<\/b>.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019re skilled at design and CSS, you can create a button design from scratch. You can also grab button design code from any number of websites (there are lots of good button designs at\u00a0CSS Scan<\/a>, for instance), then make a few modifications so it works in your email.<\/p>\nFirst step: Create your email and insert your poll.<\/p>\n
Then go to the GMass settings box and\u00a0click the HTML link<\/b>\u00a0above the templates selection box.<\/p>\n

If you have more advanced survey needs, you should direct your email recipients to the survey on an external site. (Where you can use Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or other polling software.)<\/p>\nCan I edit the text of the poll after I create it?<\/h3>\n
Yes,\u00a0you can change the poll question and the poll links<\/b> in two different ways: By editing them in the Gmail compose window, or in the poll link in the settings.<\/p>\nEditing a poll with the GMass poll settings<\/h4>\n

Not yet. For now you won\u2019t be able to create polls using the\u00a0GMass API<\/a>; you\u2019ll need to create your email polls from the GMass settings box in Gmail or Google Workspace.<\/p>\nDo I need to leave click tracking on for polls to work?<\/h3>\n
You can turn off click tracking and your polls will still work<\/b>. If click tracking is OFF, you’ll see poll data in your campaign analytics \u2014 but those poll votes won’t count as clicks (your click rate will stay at 0%, since you’re not tracking clicks). That means you won\u2019t be able to send auto follow-ups using the \u201cno click\u201d technique I described earlier in this article.<\/p>\n
If click tracking is ON, poll votes will count as clicks on your email.<\/p>\n
Email Polls: Get Started<\/h2>\n
Email polls are\u00a0available with all GMass accounts<\/b>. To get started, create a campaign then add your first poll from the Advanced section of the GMass campaign settings box.<\/p>\n

How to Run a Simple Email Poll in Gmail with GMass<\/h2>\n
Before we dive in, we\u2019ll assume you\u2019re familiar with GMass and already have the Chrome extension running in your browser. If not,\u00a0download GMass from the Chrome Web Store<\/a>\u00a0(it\u2019s free to get started) and connect your Gmail or Google Workspace account.<\/p>\n First up:\u00a0Create your email campaign as you normally would<\/b>\u00a0in GMass. You don\u2019t need to do anything special in the initial campaign setup process to add a poll.<\/p>\n When you\u2019re ready to add your poll, open the GMass settings. Then head to the\u00a0Advanced<\/b>\u00a0section. Find the\u00a0Poll<\/b>\u00a0option.<\/p>\n Click the \u201cSimple email poll\u201d link. That will bring up the GMass simple poll builder.<\/p>\n Type in your poll question here. (You can always change it later in the body of the email.) Then add your poll answers in the fields. Add more options with the\u00a0+<\/b>\u00a0button or remove options with the\u00a0–<\/b>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n Click the \u201cAdd the poll\u201d button to insert your survey into the body of your email.<\/p>\n Each of the poll options is a link.<\/b>\u00a0For instance, in my poll, the Citizen Kane link is \u201chttps:\/\/www.gpolls.net\/poll\/?e=sam.g@wordzen.com&a=Citizen%20Kane\u201d. GMass will add unique identification info to those links as emails go out to each of your recipients.<\/p>\n When your email is ready,\u00a0click the GMass button<\/b>\u00a0to send.<\/p>\n Now that your survey is out in the world, you can watch the results in real time.<\/p>\n Check your campaign report by going to the GMass dashboard, the web-based reporting option, or the Google Sheet connected to your campaign.<\/p>\n To see your poll reporting in the dashboard or web-based report, click<\/strong> on the number underneath \u201cPolls\u201d<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 it\u2019s updated immediately whenever someone votes.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s where to click if you\u2019re looking at reporting in the dashboard:<\/p>\n And here it is in the web-based report:<\/p>\n In both cases, clicking will bring up the fly-out panel on the right side of the screen. That will show you who voted, their response, and when they cast their vote<\/strong>. You’ll also get a summary of the votes in handy graph form<\/strong> and you can download the results as a CSV, Excel file, or Google Sheet from the Download<\/strong> link.<\/p>\n Also note: In the \u201cClick Rate\u201d section of the stats,\u00a0each vote is also tallying as a click on your email<\/b>.<\/p>\n When you\u2019re ready to analyze your poll results, you can\u00a0download the data<\/b>\u00a0as a CSV or Excel file \u2014 or export it to Google Sheets.<\/p>\n You can now analyze your poll results however you\u2019d like in your spreadsheet app of choice.<\/p>\n If you connected a Google Sheet to your campaign and chose to update that sheet with campaign data, you’ll also be able to see poll results in that sheet.<\/p>\n After you send your campaign, GMass will add a new column at the end of your Google Sheet called POLL_ANSWER where you can see if the person in each row voted and their voting choice.<\/p>\n Much like the other reporting columns GMass adds to your Google Sheets (OPENED, CLICKED, and so on), if you use the same sheet in multiple campaigns, those columns\u00a0can<\/em> get overwritten.<\/p>\n POLL_ANSWER works the same. So if you use this same Google Sheet to run two campaigns with two different polls, the second campaign’s results will overwrite the first campaign’s results<\/strong>. You can always see the past results by using Google Sheets’ “History” feature.<\/p>\n By default, when votes in a poll in your email, they’re redirected to a basic thank you page on the gpolls domain.<\/p>\n As of March 2024, you now have the option to send poll respondents somewhere more customized.<\/p>\n You can redirect poll takers to:<\/p>\n Either way, to set up a custom landing page, head to the GMass dashboard<\/a>. Click the gear icon to open the settings. Then go to\u00a0Other > Poll settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n You can now enter a redirect URL or a message to show poll respondents.<\/p>\n Note: This is an account-level setting. That means you won’t choose a different landing page for every poll.<\/em><\/p>\n If you enter a redirect URL, GMass will redirect poll takers to that site (say, your homepage or a relevant landing page).<\/p>\n If you enter Custom HTML… Now that I\u2019ve covered the basics of setting up a poll in GMass and monitoring the results, I\u2019ll cover a few more advanced things you can with this feature. And yes, I fully recognize these are \u201csimple polls\u201d so discussing advanced techniques is contradictory. Let\u2019s just roll with it.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a reason you\u2019re sending out a poll: You want people to respond to it.<\/p>\n With GMass\u2019s\u00a0auto follow-ups<\/b>\u00a0feature you can\u00a0stay on email recipients who don\u2019t vote \u2014 and continue nudging them until they do<\/b>.<\/p>\n When you\u2019re setting up your email with the poll, head to the settings box and open the\u00a0Auto Follow-up<\/a>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n Check the box under Stage 1, then set the follow-up to go out If\u00a0 Now\u00a0your auto follow-up will go out to anyone who doesn\u2019t click<\/b>\u00a0(and, thereby, vote) on the email. However, you\u2019ll need to make sure there aren\u2019t any other links in the email \u2014 as clicks on those will still count as clicks.<\/p>\n You can set unlimited stages of auto follow-ups. If someone hasn\u2019t voted on your poll after 157 total emails\u2026 they\u2019re not going to, and you\u2019ve more or less done all you could.<\/p>\n Once you\u2019ve set up your follow-ups, you can\u00a0test the entire sequence<\/b>\u00a0by scrolling to the top of the settings box and clicking the arrow next to the Send Test button. Then check the box to \u201cSend all stages<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Click the Send Test button and you\u2019ll get a test email featuring your first message along with all of its follow-ups.<\/p>\n And if all looks good, send the first email in the campaign by clicking the red GMass button.<\/p>\n These are simple polls and they look simple. But they don\u2019t have to look\u00a0that<\/i>\u00a0simple.<\/p>\n GMass gives you the\u00a0capabilities to edit the HTML of your emails<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 which means you can\u00a0add some styling to your poll options<\/b>.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re skilled at design and CSS, you can create a button design from scratch. You can also grab button design code from any number of websites (there are lots of good button designs at\u00a0CSS Scan<\/a>, for instance), then make a few modifications so it works in your email.<\/p>\n First step: Create your email and insert your poll.<\/p>\n Then go to the GMass settings box and\u00a0click the HTML link<\/b>\u00a0above the templates selection box.<\/p>\n Add the CSS for your buttons.<\/p>\n I am going to add the following code for some attractive gray-ish buttons. I\u2019m adding this CSS code inline to every button (that\u2019s the only method that works; you can\u2019t add a stylesheet to the email in the HTML editor):<\/p>\n Which gives us these buttons:<\/p>\n Here\u2019s how those buttons look to the recipient (the same as in the compose window, which is the goal):<\/p>\n And the stylish buttons\u00a0function exactly the same as the default links<\/b>.<\/p>\n The GMass polling function is for simple, one-question surveys. It\u2019s\u00a0not intended for anything more complex<\/b>. If you have more advanced survey needs, you should direct your email recipients to the survey on an external site. (Where you can use Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or other polling software.)<\/p>\n Yes,\u00a0you can change the poll question and the poll links<\/b> in two different ways: By editing them in the Gmail compose window, or in the poll link in the settings.<\/p>\n Here’s my original poll:<\/p>\n I’ll go back into the GMass settings, to the Advanced section, and click the\u00a0Simple Email Poll<\/strong> link.<\/p>\n That brings up the polls pop-up \u2014 with my current poll in there. I can now edit it.<\/p>\n Click the “Add the poll” button and… the updated poll is now in the email.<\/p>\n Here\u2019s my original poll:<\/p>\n I clicked on the \u201cYes\u201d link, which brought up the link options.<\/p>\n I clicked \u201cChange\u201d and then changed \u201cYes\u201d to \u201cYeah\u201d in the two necessary spots.<\/p>\n Now when I send the email, my recipients will see \u201cYeah\u201d as the option (and if they vote for that option, I\u2019ll see \u201cYeah\u201d in my results data).<\/p>\n Yes! See the section in this article on creating landing pages.<\/p>\n Yes, polls will work if you use a\u00a0custom tracking domain<\/a>\u00a0for click tracking in your emails.<\/p>\n Not yet. For now you won\u2019t be able to create polls using the\u00a0GMass API<\/a>; you\u2019ll need to create your email polls from the GMass settings box in Gmail or Google Workspace.<\/p>\n You can turn off click tracking and your polls will still work<\/b>. If click tracking is OFF, you’ll see poll data in your campaign analytics \u2014 but those poll votes won’t count as clicks (your click rate will stay at 0%, since you’re not tracking clicks). That means you won\u2019t be able to send auto follow-ups using the \u201cno click\u201d technique I described earlier in this article.<\/p>\n If click tracking is ON, poll votes will count as clicks on your email.<\/p>\n Email polls are\u00a0available with all GMass accounts<\/b>.
