Here are seven \u201cpros\u201d for sending your wedding invitations over email rather than through the postal service.<\/p>\n
Less expensive<\/h3>\n
One of the biggest reasons for opting into online invitations is the cost. Paper invitations can run hundreds of dollars \u2014 and might even push into the thousands for a big wedding with ornate invitations.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s nuts.<\/p>\n
Online invitations are almost always going to be cheaper.<\/b>\u00a0Now\u2026 if you use one of the digital invitation services, it\u2019ll cost you. But it won\u2019t cost you anywhere close to what paper invites cost.<\/p>\n
And as we\u2019ll show you later in this article, you can run all of your wedding with the GMass email platform inside of your own Gmail for a fraction of the cost.<\/p>\n

The biggest reason people default to physical wedding invitations over digital ones is the formality.\u00a0Fancy, pricey, physical invitations still carry a different symbolic weight than digital invites.<\/b><\/p>\n
The chasm between the two types of invites is getting smaller. However, formal weddings etiquette guidelines still default to paper invites.<\/p>\n
That alone may keep you from going digital.<\/p>\n
People take digital invites less seriously<\/b><\/h3>\n
It\u2019s possible \u2014 not guaranteed, but possible \u2014 some guests might not take your wedding as serious if you send digital invites.\u00a0Sending email invitations requires less cost and (likely) less effort.<\/b>\u00a0And some of your guests might translate that perceived lack of cost\/effort into treating your invite, and wedding, like it\u2019s less of a big deal.<\/p>\n

Since email is a form of asynchronous communication, often we\u2019ll see an email and plan to take care of it later. That includes invitations. While wedding invitations are important enough to stand out from other types of online invites \u2014 they\u2019re still online invites at their core.<\/p>\n
Paper invites are harder to ignore. Those sit on a counter or you stick them to the fridge. Some people still slack on their RSVPs, but the invitation still stands out.<\/p>\n
No physical keepsakes<\/b><\/h3>\n
Your physical wedding invitation would go in a scrapbook or a frame \u2014 either way, you\u2019ll keep it for decades.<\/p>\n
Digital invitations are more ephemeral.<\/b>\u00a0You could print it out and put it in a scrapbook \u2014 but that\u2019s hardly the same.<\/p>\n
With digital invitations you miss out on a popular, tangible wedding keepsake.<\/p>\n

Everyone younger than the baby boomers will know exactly what to do with a digital invitation. They\u2019ll spot it in their inbox. They\u2019ll read it. They\u2019ll figure out how to click your link to RSVP.<\/p>\n
Your grandparents, and other older relatives and family friends you invite, might not. They come from the era of only physical invitations. Sure, they spend a lot of time online (mostly spreading conspiracy theories on Facebook and misusing emojis). But\u00a0digital invitations could be too flustering<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Risk of spam<\/b><\/h3>\n
The mail you send through the post office won\u2019t wind up going to a different mailbox because it might be spam. Because no such filter and no such mailbox exist.<\/p>\n
The postal service may lose, destroy, or delay what you send. They may deliver it to the wrong address. But\u00a0they won\u2019t mark it as spam<\/b>.<\/p>\n

There are\u00a0three main ways to send online wedding invitations<\/b>. You can use a digital invitation service, send a mass email, or use an email platform that allows for personalization in mass emails.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s a breakdown of the pros and cons of those options.<\/p>\n
Digital invitation services (Evite, Paperless Post, and the like)<\/b><\/h3>\n
Most (if not all) digital invitation services offer wedding invitations. You\u2019ll upload your list of guests, use the site\u2019s design wizard to set up your invitation, then send through the platform.<\/p>\n
The services generally handle RSVPs for you as well.<\/p>\n
Pros:<\/h4>\n

- Design templates.<\/b>\u00a0Digital invitation services come with lots of options for pre-designed templates. You\u00a0should\u00a0<\/i>be able to find one that\u2019s your style.<\/li>\n
- RSVPs.<\/b>\u00a0They can handle your RSVPs.<\/li>\n
- Keeping it simple (in theory).<\/b>\u00a0They aim to make the digital invitation process as simple as possible.<\/li>\n
- Cheaper than paper.<\/b>\u00a0They cost less than paper invitations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Cons:<\/h4>\n
- \n
- They aren\u2019t that<\/i>\u00a0cheap.<\/b> You\u2019ll probably pay more than you think for digital invitations. Ready to spend well in the hundreds of dollars just to send a small batch of emails?<\/li>\n
- They aren\u2019t\u00a0that<\/i>\u00a0simple.<\/b> The digital invitation process isn\u2019t always easy, especially when you want to customize something on your invitations or otherwise deviate from the sites\u2019 standard options.<\/li>\n
- Ignorable.<\/b>\u00a0We\u2019ve all become conditioned to ignore emails from these services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Sending a mass email with everyone BCCed<\/b><\/h3>\n
Don\u2019t want to overcomplicate things? (Or even minority complicate things?) You could always dump all your guests\u2019 emails into the BCC field of an email, whip up a few sentences as an invitation, and click send.<\/p>\n
Pros:<\/h4>\n

- It doesn\u2019t get cheaper than this.<\/b>\u00a0Send a mass email from your personal email account and you\u2019ll spend roughly $0.<\/li>\n

- It\u2019s quick.<\/b>\u00a0Your invitation will be out into the world in a matter of minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Cons:<\/h4>\n

- It\u2019s too<\/em> informal.<\/b>\u00a0While digital invitations have become accepted from an etiquette standpoint, a mass email BCCing your guests is a bridge too far.<\/li>\n
- There\u2019s no personalization.<\/b>\u00a0You can\u2019t specify who is invited (plus one, kids, and so on).<\/li>\n
- RSVPs.<\/b>\u00a0You\u2019ll have to figure out your own RSVP system.<\/li>\n
- Almost no design options.<\/b>\u00a0Design options will be extremely limited.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Personalized individual emails<\/b><\/h3>\n
The final option we\u2019ll cover is the middle ground between the expensive, involved digital invitation services and the fast and cheap but too informal mass email BCC.<\/p>\n
Here, you\u2019ll use a mass email platform to send your invitations. Obviously, we at GMass think this is the best option \u2014 but there are absolutely cons as well you should know about as you\u2019re deciding.<\/p>\n

A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your Online Wedding Invitations<\/b><\/h2>\n
I\u2019m now going to\u00a0walk you through the entire process of creating your own personalized digital wedding invitations<\/b>.<\/p>\n
That includes: Designing your invitation, setting up RSVPs, setting up personalization, and setting up automated follow-ups to guests who don\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve included lots of screenshots along the way. If you have your guests\u2019 info in a spreadsheet already, this process should take well under an hour.<\/p>\n
Enter your guests\u2019 info into a Google Sheet<\/b><\/h3>\n
It\u2019s possible you\u2019re already keeping your guest list in a Google Sheet. If so, this first step will be easy. If not,\u00a0add your guests to a Google Sheet<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Make sure there are columns for each guest\u2019s first name, last name, email address \u2014 and, if applicable, partner\u2019s first name and partner\u2019s last name.<\/p>\n
If you want to invite someone with a guest, just put \u201ca guest\u201d as the partner\u2019s first name and leave the partner\u2019s last name blank. And if you are going to use people\u2019s titles (e.g., Ms., Dr., and so on), include columns for those.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to use\u00a0Canva<\/a>\u00a0to create a design for your invitation. Canva has tons of free options and it\u2019s relatively easy to use (even if you\u2019ve never done any graphic design).<\/p>\n
Head to Canva and\u00a0search<\/a>\u00a0for\u00a0free wedding invitation templates<\/b>. (You can search for paid ones too… but since we\u2019re focusing on keeping costs as low as possible in this process, we\u2019ll stick with free.) Watch out for the little $ icon in the bottom right corner of an invitation thumbnail \u2014 that means the invitation uses some graphics you\u2019ll have to pay for.<\/p>\n
You can play with the various search filters to narrow down the types of invitation templates to choose from. Then\u00a0select one that looks good<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Here I\u2019ve used a\u00a0color picker Chrome extension<\/a>\u00a0to identify the color of the rose in this image. Copy the hexadecimal code for the color (it\u2019s a pound sign followed by six letters and numbers). In my case it\u2019s\u00a0#FBE361.<\/p>\n

Connect your Google Sheet to your invitation email<\/b><\/h3>\n
Open a new email compose window in Gmail (just like you normally would).<\/p>\n
Click into the Recipients field. You\u2019ll\u00a0see a GMass icon on the right side<\/b>. Click that icon.<\/p>\n

Add your guests\u2019 names to the invite<\/b><\/h3>\n
You can include your guests\u2019 names in the email using GMass\u2019s powerful\u00a0mail merge features<\/a>.<\/p>\n
To see the available mail merge options for your email, type a left curly brace\u00a0{\u00a0in the compose window. You\u2019ll see a list with\u00a0the column headers from your Google Sheet<\/b>\u00a0\u2014 all of those are now viable mail merge options for your invitations.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m going to walk you through different ways to add guests\u2019 names to the invitations, depending on how you want to handle titles and couples.<\/p>\n
All of these examples use GMass\u2019s\u00a0conditional content<\/a>\u00a0feature. You can read more about that feature in our guide but, in brief, it uses if-then logic for ultra personalization. If you don\u2019t want to learn the ins and outs of conditional email content, you can\u00a0just copy and paste the examples below<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Using mail merge to add guests\u2019 first names<\/h4>\n
Copy and paste this line into your email:<\/p>\n

(We\u00a0could<\/i>\u00a0set up a much more complex system to figure out who has and hasn\u2019t submitted the RSVP, but this method will likely be almost perfect \u2014 it\u2019s not worthwhile to do something much more convoluted.)<\/p>\n
Return to your email draft and open the GMass settings. Then click into the\u00a0Auto Follow-up<\/b>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n

Click the radio button next to\u00a0Create Drafts<\/b>. That means GMass will create drafts of all your emails so you can review them before you send.<\/p>\n
