Make sure your SMTP service <strong>allows you to use ports like 25 and\/or 2525<\/strong>, which allow for <strong>non-TLS\/SSL connections<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-does-it-overwrite-mlep\">2. Does it overwrite the Message-ID header?<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image2-2.png\" alt=\"Preserving the Gmail Message-ID\" width=\"1394\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s best if your SMTP server retains, and doesn\u2019t overwrite or alter, the <strong>Gmail Message-ID header<\/strong>\u00a0that GMass passes along to it.<\/p>\n<p>GMass needs the Message-ID to <strong>track the journey<\/strong>\u00a0of the email \u2014 and if the Message-ID is altered, that can even <strong>affect things like message threading<\/strong>. Retaining the Message-ID header is also important for <strong>authentication<\/strong>\u00a0and to <strong>preserve deliverability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-does-it-use-a-cons-bruu\">3. Does it use a consistent Mail-From domain?<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image7-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image7-2.png\" alt=\"Setting the MAIL FROM domain in Amazon SES\" width=\"902\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Take note if your SMTP service uses its own domain as its Return-Path or uses your From address.<\/p>\n<p>If it uses its own domain, you likely won\u2019t need to set up your own SPF record for it. But if it uses your domain, you will probably have to go through the extra step of setting up DNS records to handle its authentication.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-can-your-bounce-no-turd\">4. Can your bounce notifications go to the From address?<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image3-2.png\" alt=\"A forwarded bounce notification from ReachMail\" width=\"1354\" height=\"1056\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Your SMTP service should <strong>forward its bounce notifications to the From address<\/strong>\u00a0of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>That way, GMass can process those bounces and manage them properly: Including them in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/reports\/\">campaign reports<\/a>\u00a0and adding the addresses to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/features\/bounce-management\">bounce lists<\/a>\u00a0for automatic suppression in future campaigns.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-can-you-turn-off-t-nsna\">5. When you use GMass\u2019s, <strong>all your campaign data will be in the same report<\/strong>. Plus, with GMass, you can set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/ssl-email-tracking-domains\/\">custom tracking domain <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/ssl-email-tracking-domains\/\">with<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/ssl-email-tracking-domains\/\">\u00a0SSL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you leave open\/click tracking on at your SMTP provider, your emails can be \u201cdouble tracked.\u201d Those extra tracking links can <strong>increase your risk of winding up in the spam folder<\/strong>\u00a0(especially if the ones from your SMTP service are shared tracking links, where other peoples\u2019 reputations can affect <em>your<\/em>\u00a0deliverability).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-are-there-quota-re-ehac\">6. Are there quota restrictions on your SMTP account?<\/h3>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image8-2.png\" alt=\"A quota limit email from Sendinblue\" width=\"902\" height=\"698\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Odds are you\u2019re setting up your account at this SMTP provider because you want to break Gmail\u2019s limits. So make sure the service you choose will <strong>allow you to send the volume of messages you\u2019re planning to send<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-does-your-service-hlww\">7. Does your service preserve the DKIM headers that GMass passes along (or can you set up DKIM through the service)?<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/dkim-settings\/\">set up DKIM in GMass<\/a>, we\u2019ll add a <strong>DKIM header<\/strong>\u00a0to your campaign for DMARC authentication. (That link tells you how and why you should set up DKIM in GMass\u00a0if you\u2019re using an external SMTP service).<\/p>\n<p>Does your SMTP service <strong>retain the headers from GMass<\/strong>, or <strong>wipe them out<\/strong>\u00a0and write its own? Here, for example, Mailjet wiped my DKIM header and I failed DMARC as a result. I need to set up DKIM inside Mailjet in order to hit alignment.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-2.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image4-2.png\" alt=\"DKIM headers from GMass stripped by MailJet\" width=\"1804\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>You\u2019ll either <strong>need a service that retains the DKIM headers<\/strong>\u00a0we pass along or a service that <strong>allows you to set up DKIM <\/strong>with them if you want to DKIM alignment.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-can-you-have-multi-gjtj\">8.
