{"id":23976,"date":"2024-01-31T23:10:59","date_gmt":"2024-01-31T23:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/?p=23976"},"modified":"2024-02-01T01:23:56","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T01:23:56","slug":"how-to-set-up-dmarc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/how-to-set-up-dmarc\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Set Up DMARC Authentication (Fast Beginner&#8217;s Guide &#8211; New!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This article is a beginner\u2019s guide on <strong>how to set up DMARC<\/strong>\u00a0because, really, DMARC <em>sounds<\/em>\u00a0more technically intimidating than it actually is.<\/p>\n<p>In this guide I\u2019m going to <strong>cover the entire DMARC setup process<\/strong>, which includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making sure you have SPF\/DKIM in place<\/li>\n<li>Creating your DMARC policy<\/li>\n<li>Adding the record to your domain<\/li>\n<li>Testing to make sure everything worked<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>That process <\/strong><em><strong>should<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0take about five minutes or less.<\/strong>\u00a0The only reason I didn\u2019t want to call this a \u201c5-minute guide\u201d is because you\u2019ll also need SPF or DKIM in place before you can set up DMARC. If you need to set up one of those and <em>then<\/em>\u00a0DMARC, that will take slightly longer.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s jump in to setting up DMARC authentication for your domain.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-set-up-dmarc-tszo\">How to Set Up DMARC: Table of Contents<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#what-is-dmarc-in-und-cfvh\">What Is DMARC in Under 100 Words?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#step-1-testing-wheth-xkkr\">Step 1: Testing Whether SPF\/DKIM Are Set Up for Your Domain<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"what-is-dmarc-in-und-cfvh\"><a href=\"#step-2-create-your-d-tjbj\">Step 2: Create Your DMARC Record<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#step-3-adding-your-d-bjrt\">Step 3: Adding Your DMARC Policy Record to Your Domain<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#how-to-set-up-dmarc-lusz\">How to Set Up DMARC: Next Steps<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Is DMARC in Under 100 Words?<\/h2>\n<p>Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting &amp; Conformance (DMARC) is a policy you create and attach to your domain to instruct mail servers how to handle emails from your domain when they fail SPF and DKIM.<\/p>\n<p>Emails that are sent through unauthorized servers or spoof your domain will fail SPF and DKIM, at which point <strong>the mail server checks the DMARC policy to determine whether to still deliver that email<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>DMARC can provide a deliverability boost, as it helps email services determine that you are who you say you are and that emails from your domain are valid.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-do-spf-and-dkim-fpgl\">How do SPF and DKIM relate to DMARC?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>SPF<\/strong>\u00a0stands for Sender Policy Framework. It\u2019s a domain record where you specify what mail servers have permission to send emails using your domain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DKIM<\/strong>\u00a0stands for DomainKeys Identified Mail. It\u2019s like a digital signature that\u2019s attached to your emails to help a mail server determine whether the email was authorized.<\/p>\n<p>While SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are referred to as the three main authentication methods for email, <strong>DMARC works differently than the other two<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DMARC relies on SPF and DKIM<\/strong>; SPF and DKIM are used to authenticate an email, DMARC then tells the mail server what to do with the email when it fails both SPF and DKIM checks.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"do-i-need-to-set-up-loex\">Do I need to set up DMARC?<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cNeed\u201d is a strong word\u2026 but you really <em>should<\/em>\u00a0set up DMARC.<\/p>\n<p>As of February 1st, 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/gmail-bulk-sender-guidelines\/\">Google and Yahoo\/AOL put new policies in place<\/a>\u00a0for anyone sending messages to their email users.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All senders are required to have a SPF or DKIM record<\/strong>\u00a0in place; DMARC is <em>not<\/em>\u00a0required.<\/p>\n<p>However, if you\u2019re setting up SPF\/DKIM, there\u2019s no reason <em>not<\/em>\u00a0to also set up DMARC.<\/p>\n<p>Bulk senders \u2014 defined as people sending 5,000+ messages in a day to gmail.com addresses or a large volume of daily emails to Yahoo\/AOL addresses \u2014 <em><strong>are<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0required to have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC set up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-dmarc-help-my-d-ulbd\">Does DMARC help my deliverability?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes. DMARC, along with the other email authentication methods, <strong>can help with deliverability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>None of them is a magic bullet, though. If you set up a DMARC policy, that doesn\u2019t mean suddenly every single email you send will go to the inbox and not the spam folder.<\/p>\n<p>DMARC is <strong>one helpful deliverability tool you have at your disposal<\/strong>, but many other factors also contribute to where your emails land. (For instance, things like your domain and IP reputation, the content of your messages, and how many people have marked your prior emails as spam.)<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"do-i-need-to-set-up-mbbi\">Do I need to set up DMARC if I have a gmail.com email address?<\/h3>\n<p>You do not need to set up DMARC for your gmail.com address\u2026 because you can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>In order to set up DMARC, you need to be able to access your domain name\u2019s DNS records. You don\u2019t have access to gmail.com\u2019s records, since Google owns that domain name. And they already have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC set up.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-if-i-don-t-cont-fgdr\">What if I don\u2019t control my own domain name?<\/h3>\n<p>You might not be able to access the DNS records for your domain name. (Example: Maybe you work for a company and send emails through them.)<\/p>\n<p>In that case, if you don\u2019t have a DMARC policy in place, <strong>you\u2019ll need to talk to <\/strong><em id=\"step-1-testing-wheth-xkkr\"><strong>someone<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0to have them set that up<\/strong>. That might be an IT person or another administrator; really, whoever\u2019s in charge of the domain.<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s cover how to set up DMARC.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Testing Whether SPF\/DKIM Are Set Up for Your Domain<\/h2>\n<p>A DMARC policy doesn\u2019t stand alone; it needs a SPF or DKIM record\u00a0in place for mail servers to utilize it.<\/p>\n<p>That means our first step is going to be determining <strong>whether or not you already have SPF\/DKIM in place<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 and if not, setting up one of them.<\/p>\n<p>GMass has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/analyze\">free email analyzer<\/a>\u00a0tool where you can check out whether you have SPF and DKIM records for your domain. (And while we\u2019re in there, we\u2019ll also check if you have DMARC set up already too.)<\/p>\n<p>Head over to the email analyzer, then <strong>copy the test address<\/strong>\u00a0it provides.<\/p>\n<p>Go to your email account and <strong>send an email to that address<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It should only take a few seconds for GMass to process your email and show you everything going on behind-the-scenes with your sending process.<\/p>\n<p>You can see whether you have a valid DKIM signature in the <strong>Headers<\/strong>\u00a0section\u2026<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image6-5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image6-5.png\" alt=\"Check if you have DKIM set up\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1267\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>If you have an SPF record, that will be in the <strong>SPF<\/strong>\u00a0section\u2026<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image2-6.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image2-6.png\" alt=\"See if you have SPF set up\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1267\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And you can see if you have a DMARC record in place in the <strong>DMARC<\/strong>\u00a0section\u2026<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image1-6.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image1-6.png\" alt=\"Check if you have DMARC and if not, here's how to set up DMARC\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1267\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>\u2026or not.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image3-6.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image3-6.png\" alt=\"What it looks like when you don't have a DMARC record\" width=\"1999\" height=\"804\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"why-do-i-have-a-dkim-qpbn\">Why do I have a DKIM record in place when I know I\u2019ve never set one up?<\/h3>\n<p>If you have a DKIM record in place and you know you\u2019ve never gone through this process, it\u2019s likely the default DKIM record Google uses for Google Workspace accounts.<\/p>\n<p>You should still set up your own so you can achieve DKIM alignment with DMARC.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"setting-up-spf-or-dk-ugkk\">Setting up SPF or DKIM for your domain<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ve published quick guides on adding SPF and DKIM records for your domain.<\/p>\n<p>Either one will take about five minutes, assuming you have access to your domain\u2019s DNS records at your registrar or host.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Here\u2019s the guide to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/set-up-spf\/\">set up SPF<\/a><\/li>\n<li>And here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/how-to-set-up-dkim\/\">how to set up DKIM<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re choosing one or the other, we recommend DKIM because <strong>it\u2019s easier to pass DMARC alignment with DKIM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We explain why in our article on using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/dkim-settings\/\">GMass\u2019s special DKIM settings<\/a>\u00a0(which you\u2019d use if you were sending emails in GMass using a SMTP service, otherwise don\u2019t worry about it).<\/p>\n<p>Once you have your SPF or DKIM policy in place, <strong id=\"step-2-create-your-d-tjbj\">you\u2019re ready to set up DMARC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Create Your DMARC Record<\/h2>\n<p>A DMARC policy is usually just one line of text \u2014 a line you do <strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0have to write yourself.<\/p>\n<p>I use a site called the <a href=\"https:\/\/dmarcian.com\/dmarc-record-wizard\/\">DMARC Record Wizard<\/a>\u00a0to create my DMARC records. There are plenty of other DMARC generators out there if you just <em>have<\/em>\u00a0to do something different.<\/p>\n<p>Our recommended settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the <strong>type<\/strong>\u00a0of DMARC policy, select the \u201cnothing yet, just collect data\u201d option.<\/li>\n<li>For the <strong>reporting email address<\/strong>, enter a general address at your domain.<\/li>\n<li>You do not want to receive <strong>individual failure reports<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>We recommend <strong>relaxed<\/strong>\u00a0alignment for both DKIM and SPF.<\/li>\n<li>You can say no to <strong>subdomains<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Apply to <strong>100 percent<\/strong>\u00a0of email.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tool should spit out a result that looks quite a bit like this:<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image7-4.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image7-4.png\" alt=\"The DMARC info you'll need as you move forward with how to set up DMARC\" width=\"1999\" height=\"633\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s all you need; <strong id=\"step-3-adding-your-d-bjrt\">you\u2019re now ready to set up the policy<\/strong>\u00a0for your domain.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Adding Your DMARC Policy Record to Your Domain<\/h2>\n<p>In order to set up your DMARC policy for your domain, you\u2019ll need to be able to <strong>add a Domain Name System (DNS) record<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Since you\u2019re a beginner, it\u2019s most likely that you\u2019ll edit your DNS records at your <strong>domain registrar<\/strong>\u00a0(e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap, and the rest).<\/p>\n<p>If you log into your account at your registrar, attempt to edit the DNS records for your domain, and they tell you the records are managed elsewhere, it could be your web hosting company. (There are also third-party DNS management platforms, but it\u2019s much less likely you\u2019re using one of those.)<\/p>\n<p>For this example, I\u2019m going to show you how to create your DMARC record at your domain registrar.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-create-your-d-munz\">How to create your DMARC record at your domain registrar<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ll demonstrate how to create the record at GoDaddy. If you\u2019re using a different registrar, it won\u2019t look exactly like this but the basics are the same: Go to your domain, find the section with its DNS settings, add a record.<\/p>\n<p>First, <strong>log into your domain registrar<\/strong>, then go to your domain.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the <strong>DNS management options<\/strong>\u00a0for the domain, then find the link or button to <strong>add a new record<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image4-5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image4-5.png\" alt=\"Add a new domain record\" width=\"1999\" height=\"964\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Now enter these settings:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Type<\/strong>: TXT<\/li>\n<li><strong>Name\/Host<\/strong>: The result you got from the DMARC creation wizard, labeled <em>Target\/Host\/Location<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Value: <\/strong>The result you got from the DMARC creation wizard, labeled <em>Your DMARC Record Is<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Time-to-Live (TTL): <\/strong>1 hour or 3600 seconds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Then <strong>save<\/strong>\u00a0the record.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image5-5.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image5-5.png\" alt=\"What to put in the various fields\" width=\"1999\" height=\"964\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Now when you scroll through the list of DNS records for your domain, you should see your new TXT record.<\/p>\n<p>It will take up to <strong>48 hours <\/strong>for the DNS changes to propagate. It usually doesn\u2019t take that long \u2014 in my experience, usually everything is set in a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>After you\u2019ve waited at least a few hours, you can <strong id=\"how-to-set-up-dmarc-lusz\">run that GMass email analyzer again<\/strong>\u00a0to check if your new DMARC record is now up and valid.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Set Up DMARC: Next Steps<\/h2>\n<p>You have now <strong>successfully set up a DMARC policy for your domain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a bulk sender, that\u2019s a required step to stay compliant with Google and Yahoo\u2019s new policies.
