But sometimes, you still need to do a bit of manual work on your list.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/gmass-api\/\">the GMass API<\/a>, you can both <strong>add and remove email addresses or entire domains from your account\u2019s unsubscribe list<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use the API to temporarily \u201cunsubscribe\u201d someone to suppress emails to them from just a single campaign.<\/p>\n<p>In this guide, I\u2019ll expand on our <a href=\"https:\/\/api.gmass.co\/docs\">docs<\/a>\u00a0to get deeper into the <strong>unsubscribe list management you can do with the GMass API<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"managing-unsubscribe-jwan\">Managing Unsubscribes with the GMass API: Table of Contents<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#step-0-making-a-key-szwj\">Step 0: Making a Key and Using It to Authenticate Into the GMass API<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"step-0-making-a-key-szwj\"><a href=\"#adding-an-email-addr-ipdk\">Adding an Email Address or Domain to Your Unsubscribe List<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#removing-an-email-ad-bucn\">Removing an Email Address or Domain From Your Unsubscribe List<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#suppressing-an-email-zoig\">Suppressing an Email Address for a Particular Campaign (Temporary \u201cUnsubscribing\u201d)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#ready-to-use-the-gma-ghdt\">Ready to Use the GMass API for Your Applications?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Step 0: Making a Key and Using It to Authenticate Into the GMass API<\/h2>\n<p>The first step (or, I guess, pre-first step) when you want to use the GMass API is <strong>creating a key<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"making-a-new-gmass-a-sywd\">Making a new GMass API key (or retrieving an existing one)<\/h3>\n<p>You can do that in the GMass <a href=\"http:\/\/gmass.co\/dashboard\">dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re in the dashboard, click the gear-shaped <strong>Settings<\/strong>\u00a0icon on the top right. You can also use that site for testing by pasting your API key into the top bar of the page.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Adding an Email Address or Domain to Your Unsubscribe List<\/h2>\n<p>First up we\u2019ll cover <strong>adding addresses to your unsubscribe list<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>When you add an address or domain to your list, it\u2019s <strong>an <\/strong><em><strong>account-level<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0unsubscribe<\/strong>. That means: As long as that address\/domain stays on your list, any time in the future you try to send them a campaign, GMass will suppress the message.<\/p>\n<p>Also: If any GMass users on your same email domain or your team plan have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/new-feature-globally-shared-unsubscribes-and-bounces-for-multi-user-google-apps-organizations\/\">global unsubscribes<\/a>\u00a0turned on, any of <em>their<\/em>\u00a0emails to your unsubscribed addresses and domains will also be suppressed.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"adding-an-individual-bnbf\">Adding an individual email address to your unsubscribe list<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019ll use the <strong>\/api\/unsubscribes<\/strong>\u00a0endpoint to add an address to our list.<\/p>\n<p>You can pass the email address you want to unsubscribe with the <strong>emailAddress<\/strong>\u00a0parameter.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-singleaddress.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-singleaddress.png\" alt=\"Adding a single email to the unsubscribe list via the GMass API\" width=\"1770\" height=\"1556\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And now, checking my unsubscribe list over at the GMass dashboard, I see this address is now on my list.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-addressindashboard.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-addressindashboard.png\" alt=\"Seeing that address on the list\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1126\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"adding-an-entire-dom-ubmg\">Adding an entire domain to your unsubscribe list<\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes you want to <strong>unsubscribe an entire domain (or company)<\/strong>\u00a0from your campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you reached out to someone at Uber and they said \u201cDon\u2019t ever contact us again,\u201d you\u2019d want to make sure you never email anyone with an @uber.com email address.<\/p>\n<p>To unsubscribe a domain, we\u2019ll use <strong>\/api\/unsubscribes\/domain\/{domain}<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-domain.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-domain.png\" alt=\"Unsubscribing an entire domain with the GMass API\" width=\"1776\" height=\"1194\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And now, in the GMass dashboard, I see that uber.com is unsubscribed at the account level.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-domainindashboard.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-domainindashboard.png\" alt=\"Seeing my unsubscribed domain in the GMass dashboard\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1106\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Now let\u2019s cover how to <em id=\"removing-an-email-ad-bucn\">remove<\/em>\u00a0email addresses or domains from your unsubscribe list using the GMass API.<\/p>\n<h2>Removing an Email Address or Domain From Your Unsubscribe List<\/h2>\n<p>You may, at some point, <strong>need to remove unsubscribed email addresses and domains<\/strong>\u00a0(for legitimate reasons, let\u2019s keep things legal over here) to start sending to them again.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to do it.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"removing-an-individu-rzuu\">Removing an individual email address from your unsubscribe list<\/h3>\n<p>To remove a single email address, we\u2019ll also use the <strong>\/api\/unsubscribes<\/strong>\u00a0method. Only in this situation, it will remove the address from your unsubscribe list.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we <strong>pass along the email address to remove with a query string<\/strong>\u00a0(https:\/\/api.gmass.co\/api\/unsubscribes?emailAddress={address}).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removeaddress.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removeaddress.png\" alt=\"Removing an address from my unsubscribe list\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1260\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And when I check my unsubscribe list, that email address is no longer there.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removedindashboard.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-8\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removedindashboard.png\" alt=\"Seeing the address removed\" width=\"1999\" height=\"900\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"removing-an-entire-d-lltc\">Removing an entire domain from your unsubscribe list<\/h3>\n<p>You can remove a domain similar to how you added one, using the <strong>\/api\/unsubscribes\/domain\/{domain}<\/strong>\u00a0method.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removedomain.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removedomain.png\" alt=\"Removing an unsubscribed domain wiht the API\" width=\"1766\" height=\"1204\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And now that domain is removed from my list.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removeddomainindashboard.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-10\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-removeddomainindashboard.png\" alt=\"Seeing my domain was unsubscribed\" width=\"1999\" height=\"906\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>You can also check out all your unsubscribed domains with the <strong>\/api\/unsubscribes\/domains<\/strong>\u00a0endpoint.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-getdomains.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-11\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-getdomains.png\" alt=\"Getting list of unsubscribed domains\" width=\"1772\" height=\"1330\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>You can use that to check <strong id=\"suppressing-an-email-zoig\">if you have a domain on your list<\/strong>\u00a0before you add or remove it.<\/p>\n<h2>Suppressing an Email Address for a Particular Campaign (Temporary \u201cUnsubscribing\u201d)<\/h2>\n<p>There\u2019s one more way you can use the unsubscribes method.<\/p>\n<p>You can use the GMass API unsubscribes method to <strong>suppress an email address from a single email campaign<\/strong>. In other words, to temporarily \u201cunsubscribe\u201d someone for one specific campaign.<\/p>\n<p>(If you\u2019ve used the GMass Chrome extension, you\u2019ll notice this feels a little different. In the GMass app, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/new-gmail-mail-merge-feature-use-suppression-lists-to-filter-out-recipients-of-past-campaigns\/\">suppression<\/a>\u00a0is done in the settings box and isn\u2019t semantically connected with unsubscribing.)<\/p>\n<p>To suppress an email address from a campaign, you\u2019ll use <strong>\/api\/unsubscribes\/{campaignID}<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll pass both the email address and the campaign ID to do so.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-suppress.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-12\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-suppress.png\" alt=\"Suppressing one address for one campaign\" width=\"1762\" height=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>And now, when I go to that campaign\u2019s draft in Gmail, I see the email address has been put on the suppression list.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-suppressincampaign.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-13\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/apiunsub-suppressincampaign.png\" alt=\"Seeing that address suppressed\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1305\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><em id=\"ready-to-use-the-gma-ghdt\">Note: If you want to use the API to suppress sending to people in specific campaigns or who have received another email from you in the past however many days, you\u2019ll do both of those from the \/api\/campaigns\/{campaignDraftId} endpoint.
