As the developer of two Chrome extensions, GMass<\/a> and Wordzen<\/a>, I’m always on the lookout for what other Chrome extension developers are doing.\u00a0Mailtrack<\/a> is a popular Chrome extension for Gmail that tracks individually sent emails<\/strong>. GMass tracks sent emails too, but it’s mostly used for batch email campaigns, although you can use GMass’s tracking features on individually sent emails as well. But I digress…in this post, I’ll focus on Mailtrack’s brilliance.<\/p>\n

Mailtrack and Chrome extensions<\/h3>\n

MailTrack is one of the most popular Gmail Chrome extensions on Earth, with nearly 900,000 users<\/strong>, according to the Chrome Web Store<\/a>. I admit, I’m envious\u00a0of their growth<\/strong> and would love to see GMass have that many users.<\/p>\n

One of the limitations of Chrome extensions<\/strong> has always been that they only work on the desktop<\/strong>, and\u00a0not on mobile<\/strong>. GMass only works on the desktop, not on mobile. Wordzen only works on the desktop, not on mobile. Same with Mailtrack.<\/p>\n

So when I saw\u00a0their announcement that they could now show you the checkmarks<\/strong> indicating whether an email\u00a0has been opened in the Gmail mobile app<\/strong>, my immediate reaction was, “No way, impossible!”<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

I had to see for myself. First, I turned\u00a0ON<\/strong> the mobile option on the Mailtrack Settings<\/strong> page.<\/p>\n

The checkmarks on the iPhone Gmail app<\/h3>\n

I sent a tracked email using\u00a0Mailtrack to briansmith8477@gmail.com<\/strong> from my desktop, and then looked at it in the Sent<\/strong> folder on both the\u00a0desktop<\/strong> and\u00a0iPhone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sure enough, the famous\u00a0Mailtrack checkmarks were there.<\/em><\/p>\n

But how on Earth did they do this?<\/h3>\n

Did they hack the Gmail app? Did they develop a Gmail Add-on<\/a>, which is a new way of developing functionality for the Gmail mobile app that was introduced just six months ago? Maybe, but that sill wouldn’t make sense because Gmail Add-ons<\/strong> currently only work on Android<\/strong>, not on iOS<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A closer look, and I discovered the brilliance of the\u00a0Mailtrack developers.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0answer? Labels.<\/h3>\n

They creatively\u00a0apply\u00a0Gmail Labels<\/strong> to show whether an email has been opened. Looking at my account, I found two new Labels<\/strong> had been created,\u00a0the first with one checkmark and\u00a0another with two checkmarks.<\/p>\n

When an email is sent, Mailtrack programatically applies the \u2714 Label<\/a>. When an email is opened by its recipient,\u00a0Mailtrack\u00a0removes the\u00a0\u2714 Label<\/strong> and applies the\u00a0\u2714\u2714 Label<\/strong>. Since the mobile Gmail app\u00a0 always shows\u00a0the\u00a0Labels<\/strong>\u00a0that are applied to\u00a0a message, you see checkmarks next to the message! Just brilliant.<\/p>\n

But wait, if they’re applying these Labels now, won’t\u00a0they also show\u00a0up in the desktop UI?<\/em><\/p>\n

No, they made it so that the Chrome extension\u00a0hides\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>the checkmark Labels<\/strong> when applied to a message, so that the user instead sees\u00a0the more aesthetically pleasing checkmarks<\/strong> in the message list view.<\/p>\n

The more aesthetically pleasing checkmarks look like this and show up when viewing a list of messages.<\/p>\n

Hiding the Labels in the web version of Gmail<\/h3>\n

In the example below, you can see the Sent Mail<\/strong> with the “\u2714\u2714” Label<\/strong> applied in addition to another Label, “Client Projects”<\/strong>, that I manually applied myself. But only the Client Projects<\/strong> Label<\/strong> shows next to the Subject<\/strong>. Where is the “\u2714\u2714” Label?<\/p>\n

We can prove this by removing the\u00a0Mailtrack extension and reloading Gmail.<\/p>\n

Voila, now you see the checkmark Labels applied to a Sent Mail.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Since the UI of the mobile app can’t be altered by a Chrome extension<\/strong> or anything else, the checkmark Labels<\/strong> do show on mobile, which is exactly what they want.<\/p>\n

Summary<\/h3>\n

The Chrome extension<\/strong> alters the UI to show the more aesthetically pleasing checkmarks <\/strong>while\u00a0<\/strong>hiding the checkmark Labels<\/strong>. The native Gmail mobile app<\/strong> always shows the checkmark Labels<\/strong> and nothing else, since developers don’t have the ability to change the UI of the Gmail mobile app.<\/p>\n
