them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"the-problems-with-cu-vssa\">The Problems with Current Cold Email Systems<\/h3>\n<p>Over the past couple of years, there\u2019s been a big rise of \u201chardcore\u201d cold emailers.<\/p>\n<p>This group has been empowered by niche software, often built by some of those very hardcore cold emailers themselves. <strong>These platforms aim to hyper-serve the needs of the top-level cold emailer<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 and also evangelize the idea that there\u2019s one and only one way of doing cold email right.<\/p>\n<p>Platforms like Instantly and SmartLead don\u2019t make sense for a professional salesperson or someone doing lower-volume outreach \u2014 at their price and with their features, they only make sense for people sending <em>mega<\/em>\u00a0volumes of cold emails daily.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the rise of these platforms and the discourse around them, cold emailers have largely <strong>developed a new set of \u201cmust-follow\u201d practices<\/strong>\u00a0for outreach.<\/p>\n<p>These include:<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"1-setting-up-lots-of-gqdm\">1. Setting up <em>lots<\/em>\u00a0of inboxes to keep email volume low<\/h4>\n<p>Many years ago \u2014 like, you know, 2021 \u2014 cold emailers would use one email, or a handful, paired with SMTP services like SendGrid, to send out high volumes.<\/p>\n<p>This method had its problems \u2014 often leading to addresses and domains getting shut down quickly over spam.<\/p>\n<p>So inbox rotation (distributing campaigns across lots of email addresses and domains) became the industry standard.<\/p>\n<p>We don\u2019t hate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/multisend-distributed-campaigns\/\">inbox rotation<\/a>. We offer it here at GMass. But it\u2019s a very workaround-y type of solution. It\u2019s also a tactic, not a strategy; it works for now, but only because the big email platforms allow it to work \u2014 and soon enough, it won\u2019t work anymore.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not even the biggest problem with the \u201clots of inboxes\u201d evolution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big downside: <\/strong>The inbox rotation method requires spending <em>a lot<\/em>\u00a0of money on domains and even <em>more<\/em>\u00a0money on\u00a0Google Workspace or Office 365 subscriptions.<\/p>\n<p>It also requires <em>a lot<\/em>\u00a0of time setting up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and then connecting inboxes to an email sending platform. Some of the email platforms have used this as a chance to upsell their customers by offering paid domains and mailbox setup.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, with this system, cold emailers are anticipating domains and addresses regularly getting burned \u2014 meaning <strong>an endless cycle of trashing domains and mailboxes, buying more, and doing the whole setup process again and again<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And though cold emailers have accepted the idea of using inbox rotation to distribute campaigns across all their addresses (and then handle responses from a unified inbox) \u2014 that\u2019s a <strong>convoluted system with a high learning curve<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not a great system for beginners or less-technical senders \u2014 or for people who don\u2019t want to make cold email their life and really just want to get an outreach campaign out and then get back to the rest of their work.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"2-weeks-and-weeks-of-gicw\">2. Weeks and weeks of automated warm-up<\/h4>\n<p>Before someone can start sending cold emails, the current dogma decrees that mailboxes <em>must<\/em>\u00a0be warmed up for at least four weeks (though six to eight is preferable).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big downside: <\/strong>That\u2019s a looooong waiting period between when you\u2019ve laid out hundreds or thousands of dollars but you can\u2019t yet start selling.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also, quite possibly, doing more harm to deliverability than people think.<\/p>\n<p>Automated warm-up is <em>extremely<\/em>\u00a0frowned upon by the email providers. GMass once ran the most popular warm-up system on the planet \u2014 then Google told us in no uncertain terms to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/warmup-shutting-down\/\">shut it down<\/a>\u00a0or lose our ability to send through their API. So we did.<\/p>\n<p>Someone recently asked me on Reddit if we at GMass has gotten permission to run warm-up again. We haven\u2019t. But I told them: Even if we had, we wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because there is increasing evidence that automated warm-up \u2014 where systems automatically have cold emailers sending junk to other cold emailers \u2014 is <strong>negatively affecting email addresses and domains and doing harm to their deliverability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(This is true no matter what kind of wacky \u201cwarmed up content AI targeted by provider to a special list sent on non-consecutive Tuesdays\u201d promises an email sending platform makes.)<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"3-the-imperfect-solu-vyvc\">3. The imperfect solution: Using cold email infrastructure services<\/h4>\n<p>In the past couple of years, a whole new genre of businesses have sprung up to try to help cold emailers with their problems of the cost and speed of setting up domains and mailboxes \u2014 and the cat and mouse deliverability game with Google and Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>Private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/cold-email-infrastructure-services\/\">cold email infrastructure services<\/a>\u00a0are, essentially, mini email providers. You set up domains through them, set up cheap mailboxes at scale, then send through their servers rather than Gmail\u2019s or Outlook\u2019s (or SendGrid\u2019s, or any other SMTP service).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big downside: <\/strong>These all cost in the hundreds of dollars a month \u2014 or more, depending on how many domains and inboxes you want. Yes, that\u2019s cheaper than Workspace or 365 subscriptions \u2014 but it\u2019s still a big extra bill to send cold emails.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, they save time on domain and mailbox setup\u2026 but <strong>you still need to pay for an email sending platform<\/strong>\u00a0on top of what you\u2019re paying the infrastructure service.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong id=\"coldsmtp-s-major-ben-fmzt\">deliverability of their servers is also questionable<\/strong>. There aren\u2019t many people in the world who have the talent and know-how to set up email servers used by unvetted cold emailers and keep them running at strong deliverability levels.<\/p>\n<p>So those are the problems.
