It\u2019s a vibes thing. CSVs are also how some word processing software or more rudimentary email sending platforms handle mail merge.<\/p>\n<p>At GMass, though, we run <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/google-sheets-mail-merge\/\">Google Sheets mail merges<\/a>. You put your contact list and data into a Google Sheet, connect it to your campaign, and mail merge from there.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll explain <em><strong>why<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0we use Sheets for mail merge rather than CSVs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But more important: If you DO have a CSV and want to run a mail merge, <strong>I\u2019ll show you how to use your CSV for a mail merge in GMass<\/strong>\u00a0as well. Go <a href=\"#how-to-use-a-csv-wit-rmwe\">here<\/a> now.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"csv-mail-merge-in-gm-iggx\">CSV Mail Merge in GMass: Table of Contents<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#why-gmass-uses-googl-trro\">Why GMass Uses Google Sheets, Not CSV, For Mail Merge<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#how-to-use-a-csv-wit-rmwe\">How to Use a CSV with GMass for Mail Merge<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li id=\"why-gmass-uses-googl-trro\"><a href=\"#importing-a-csv-into-xncr\">Importing a CSV into Google Sheets<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#connecting-to-a-gmas-uuxh\">Connecting to a GMass campaign<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#there-s-a-whole-lot-cudc\">There\u2019s a Whole Lot More to GMass Than CSV Mail Merge<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why GMass Uses Google Sheets, Not CSV, For Mail Merge<\/h2>\n<p>CSVs absolutely have their benefits.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They\u2019re simple.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re broadly compatible across platforms and with virtually all spreadsheet apps and programming languages.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re lightweight files.<\/li>\n<li>They\u2019re easily human-readable, unlike many other data structures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, at GMass, <strong>we have you use Google Sheets as the data source<\/strong>\u00a0for mail merges and not CSVs. Why?<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s because of two main factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Natively operating inside Google Apps.<\/li>\n<li>Being able to <em>connect<\/em>\u00a0to a data source for two-way, ongoing communication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In fact, the reason our founder created GMass in 2015 was because there <em>wasn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0a way to run a mail merge in Gmail with Google Sheets.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"natively-operating-i-nfvr\">Natively operating inside Google Apps<\/h3>\n<p>One of the things people love most about GMass is that it works <em>inside<\/em>\u00a0Gmail.<\/p>\n<p>That means GMass can slot perfectly into your usual email workflow.<\/p>\n<p>We want to <strong>make sure GMass feels as close as possible to \u201cpart\u201d of Gmail<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And that includes using Google Sheets so you can go back and forth between the two apps seamlessly.<\/p>\n<p>Google products are built to work together \u2014 so there\u2019s no reason for GMass to fight against that current.<\/p>\n<p>With that natural integration between Gmail and Google Sheets, it gives GMass even more powers \u2014 which brings me to the second reason for using Sheets rather than CSV.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"gmass-uses-google-sh-kedj\">GMass uses Google Sheets for ongoing, two-way communication<\/h3>\n<p>If you look carefully \u2014 and I mean ridiculously carefully \u2014 at the language we use at GMass, we never tell you to \u201cupload\u201d your contacts. We have you \u201cconnect\u201d a Google Sheet of contacts.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a precision to the language there for a reason.<\/p>\n<p>When an email platform uses CSVs, you have to <em>upload<\/em>\u00a0your CSV. The file lives somewhere on your computer (or in the cloud), and you upload it to your email sending software to get your contacts into an email campaign.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s no two-way communication after that<\/strong>. You can\u2019t make alterations to your contacts in your CSV and have them dynamically and automatically updated on your email platform. This is a one-time move.<\/p>\n<p>But with GMass, you <em>connect<\/em>\u00a0your Google Sheet.<\/p>\n<p>That means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you make changes to a contact\u2019s data in the Sheet before your campaign sends, <strong>GMass\u2019s mail merge will reflect those changes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>You can <strong>set up <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/recurring-automated-email-campaigns-gmail-sheets\/\">recurring campaigns<\/a><\/strong>, where GMass automatically sends out the campaign to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/instantly-send-new-rows\/\">new contacts<\/a>\u00a0you add to the Sheet.<\/li>\n<li>You can also set up recurring campaigns where GMass emails everyone on the Sheet at an interval you choose, and <strong>those new emails reflect changes you\u2019ve made in the Sheet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>GMass can <strong>write data back to the Sheet<\/strong>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/update-google-sheet-campaign-data\/\">campaign analytics<\/a>\u00a0(opens, replies, clicks, and more).<\/li>\n<li>GMass doesn\u2019t have to store your contacts and\/or force you to use it as a lite CRM \u2014 instead, you can <strong>continue to do all your contact management in the Google Sheet<\/strong> where you\u2019re comfortable. (Google Sheets itself is actually a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/google-sheets-crm\/\">great CRM option<\/a> \u2014 and we even have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/google-sheets-crm-template\/\">free Google Sheets CRM template<\/a> built to work with GMass.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But\u2026 what if you have your contacts in a CSV?<\/p>\n<p>Not to fear.<\/p>\n<p>It <strong id=\"how-to-use-a-csv-wit-rmwe\">adds roughly two minutes<\/strong>\u00a0or less to the entire process to get you rolling in GMass.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Use a CSV with GMass for Mail Merge<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a <strong>two-step process<\/strong>\u00a0to run a CSV mail merge in GMass.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li id=\"importing-a-csv-into-xncr\">Import the CSV to Google Sheets.<\/li>\n<li>Connect that Google Sheet to your new campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Importing a CSV into Google Sheets<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Open a new Google Sheet<\/strong>\u00a0and give it whatever title you want.
