(5 Step Checklist &#8211; Beginner Friendly)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can hear you screaming <strong>\u201cWhy am I not receiving emails?\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0at your computer.<\/p>\n<p>And now that you\u2019ve gotten that little modicum of catharsis, we can move on to solving the problem.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not getting emails you think you should be getting, there\u2019s usually a pretty simple solution. But there\u2019s not only <em>one<\/em>\u00a0possible solution.<\/p>\n<p>So I put together this <strong>five-step checklist<\/strong>\u00a0you can follow to <strong>diagnose why you\u2019re not receiving messages<\/strong> \u2014 and fix it, both immediately and going forward. It can even include emails from senders you\u2019ve engaged with in the past.<\/p>\n<p>So as annoying as it is, you need to check your spam folder regularly. Especially because Gmail and others delete messages from spam after 30 days, whether you\u2019ve seen them or not.<\/p>\n<p>But it can be <strong>easy to forget to check your spam folder in Gmail<\/strong>, especially if you use their default folder setup.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"how-to-fix-the-probl-cpnh\">How to fix the problem in Gmail<\/h4>\n<p>Click on the <strong>More<\/strong>\u00a0link on the left sidebar in Gmail. That\u2019s where you\u2019ll find your Spam folder.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-moreforspam.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-moreforspam.png\" alt=\"Click More in the sidebar to see the spam folder\" width=\"1642\" height=\"852\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>First off, check that folder for your missing messages.<\/p>\n<p>If any of them are legitimate, <strong>click the \u201cNot Spam\u201d button<\/strong>\u00a0at the top. That will move the email to your inbox. And Gmail takes its best guess as to which emails you receive belong in which tab.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people turn off the tabs \u2014 I know I do \u2014 but if you still have them, <strong>it\u2019s entirely possible the emails you\u2019re \u201cmissing\u201d have just been miscategorized into one of those tabs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"how-to-fix-the-probl-fjfh\">How to fix the problem in Gmail<\/h4>\n<p>You can check your tabs by <strong>clicking between them at the top of your inbox<\/strong>. The limit is huge, and most of us won\u2019t hit it.<\/p>\n<p>But if you have an account you\u2019ve been using for years (or decades at this point), or you get a lot of emails with attachments \u2014 you can actually plow through all the space Google or another email provider gives you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once you hit your storage limit, you\u2019ll stop receiving messages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"how-to-fix-the-probl-agap\">How to fix the problem in Gmail<\/h4>\n<p>Google tends to give you warnings about storage space, and you can quickly reference your storage at the bottom of the screen.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-storagespace.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-storagespace.png\" alt=\"See your account storage\" width=\"1999\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>The best quick solution for clearing up some space is to <strong>find your emails with large attachments and delete them<\/strong>. (Well\u2026 <em>Google<\/em>\u00a0would say the best solution is to pay for more space. So I suppose the \u201cbest\u201d way is relative.)<\/p>\n<p>You can run a search for large attachments by searching for size:10mb in the Gmail search bar. That will surface every email with an attachment 10 megabytes or larger. 10 megabytes isn\u2019t huge for a modern file, but it\u2019s on the larger side for an email attachment.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-largefilesearch.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-8\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-largefilesearch.png\" alt=\"Search for large attachments\" width=\"1999\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Make sure you download any of the attachments you want to keep, then delete the emails.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-deletelarge.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-deletelarge.png\" alt=\"Delete large files\" width=\"1999\" height=\"990\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>After that, go to the Trash folder in Gmail and <strong id=\"step-4-check-your-fi-xgvu\">empty it to reclaim your space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Check your filters and blocked sender lists<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019ve filtered or blocked a sender, their messages won\u2019t reach your mailbox.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s entirely <strong>possible to filter or block someone by <\/strong><em><strong>accident<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>(It\u2019s also possible that an administrator has blocked addresses for all the accounts on your domain. We\u2019ll cover that more advanced scenario in step five of this checklist.)<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"how-to-fix-the-probl-ljdx\">How to fix the problem in Gmail<\/h4>\n<p>You can see any senders you\u2019ve blocked by going into the Gmail settings. Click <strong>See all settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-seeallsettings.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-10\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-seeallsettings.png\" alt=\"See all settings to access filters and blocks\" width=\"1999\" height=\"840\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Then go to the <strong>Filters and Blocked Addresses<\/strong>\u00a0section.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-filteredandblocked.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-11\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-filteredandblocked.png\" alt=\"Go to the Filters and Blocked Addresses section\" width=\"1999\" height=\"918\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>You can see all your filters and blocks here.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-unfilter.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-12\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/notreceiving-unfilter.png\" alt=\"Remove incorrect filters and blocks\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1261\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p><strong id=\"step-5-diagnose-a-mo-stpe\">Delete any that shouldn\u2019t be there<\/strong>\u00a0to unfilter\/unblock those senders.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Diagnose a more complex problem<\/h3>\n<p>Fortunately, one of the above steps should solve the vast majority of email reception problems.<\/p>\n<p>But <strong>if none of those steps turned up your missing emails, you have to go to more advanced troubleshooting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of the other reasons why you might not be receiving emails and what to do about them.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"the-sender-is-having-nckw\">The sender is having deliverability problems<\/h4>\n<p>The good news: The most likely answer for why you\u2019re not receiving emails is\u2026 not your fault.<\/p>\n<p>The bad news: You\u2019ll have to rely on someone else to fix the problem.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re not receiving someone\u2019s emails, and none of the basic troubleshooting steps on this checklist work \u2014 <strong>it\u2019s usually the sender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They could be having deliverability issues for any number of reasons. It\u2019s best to reach out to them and let them know.<\/p>\n<p>Also, consider having them try to email you at an email address on a different provider. (For instance, register for a free Yahoo or Proton Mail account and see if you receive their emails there.)<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"your-account-adminis-dcte\">Your account administrator has blocked emails<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re on a Google Workspace account for your company, <strong>it\u2019s possible the account administrator has blocked some senders at the organization level<\/strong>. There\u2019s nothing you can do to circumvent that block.<\/p>\n<p>If this could potentially be the case, you can<strong>\u00a0talk to the administrator<\/strong>\u00a0about re-evaluating the block on that sender.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"you-ve-unsubscribed-uuvv\">You\u2019ve unsubscribed from a sender<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s possible you unsubscribed from a sender \u2014 and maybe even forgot or didn\u2019t realize it. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/list-unsubscribe-header\/\">one-click unsubscribe options<\/a>\u00a0these days that can make accidental unsubscribes more common.<\/p>\n<p>Your remedies here are to <strong>re-subscribe to the sender\u2019s list<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 or <strong>contact them<\/strong>\u00a0to see if you <em>are<\/em>\u00a0on their unsubscribe list and they could remove you.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"you-ve-been-been-blo-unwn\">You\u2019ve been been blocked by a sender<\/h4>\n<p>There\u2019s also a chance you\u2019ve been blocked by a sender.<\/p>\n<p>This can happen if they\u2019ve bounced a message to you. <strong>Often <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/email-bounce-codes\/\">bounces<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u00a0aren\u2019t your fault<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 a bounce could happen if there was something temporarily down at your email provider or even a DNS issue.<\/p>\n<p>You also wouldn\u2019t <em>know<\/em>\u00a0that you\u2019re on their blocked list. However, you could reach out to ask them to check and remove you.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"if-you-re-not-receiv-wern\">If you\u2019re not receiving <em>any<\/em>\u00a0emails, there could be DNS issues<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re not receiving ALL your emails, there\u2019s <strong>probably a fundamental issue happening somewhere in your account setup<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For individual Google Workspace users, I recommend <strong>checking the DNS settings at your domain name provider<\/strong>\u00a0to make sure the Gmail MX records are all still in place. (I recommend this because it happened to me a few months ago.)<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re still having problems after all this\u2026<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"if-all-else-fails-tr-exwe\">If all else fails, try using AI for help<\/h4>\n<p>You\u2019ve reached the point where none of the obvious solutions are fixing the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Before you go pay an expert to help you, I suggest <strong>trying ChatGPT or another AI tool<\/strong>.
