<strong>send high-volume campaigns through GMass using an SMTP service without failing DMARC authentication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If there are acronyms in that sentence that you don\u2019t know or that scare you, then good news: This is definitely for you.<\/p>\n<p>But even if you do know those acronyms, there are still situations where this system will be extremely beneficial for you as well.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>you won\u2019t find it on any email platform other than GMass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll explain the details behind why we created the From address replacement system, how and when you can use it (or not use it), and what happens when we replace your domain.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gmass-s-from-address-okas\">GMass\u2019s \u201cFrom Address\u201d pass DKIM and DMARC.<\/li>\n<li>Personal Gmail senders (@gmail.com) who send large campaigns via SMTP will <strong>always<\/strong> need replacement (to satisfy Gmail\/Yahoo sending rules and pass dashboard if your scenario allows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Is the GMass \u201cFrom Address\u201d Replacement System<\/h2>\n<p>GMass\u2019s From address replacement system is a behind-the-scenes technique we use to make sure you pass authentication when you send through GMass\u2019s SMTP servers (or, in the case of Gmail.com\u00a0users, your own SMTP server).<\/p>\n<p>With this system, <strong>we replace your sending domain with a different one to ensure you pass DKIM+DMARC alignment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image12.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" 1644px) 100vw, 1644px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So if your email address is <strong>jeff@shipperteam.com<\/strong>, you don\u2019t have DKIM set up for your domain, and you send a campaign using GMass\u2019s SMTP server \u2014 we\u2019ll automatically set up a new domain and send your campaign from <strong>jeff@shipperteam.gmusers.net.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also, if your email address is <strong>jefftheshipper@gmail.com<\/strong>, and you send a campaign using a SMTP server, we\u2019d replace your sending domain with <strong>jefftheshipper@jefftheshipper.gmuser.net<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s unlikely many, if any, recipients would notice the swapped sending domain<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 and even fewer would care. But that way, you\u2019ll be all set on the <strong>DKIM<\/strong> and <strong>DMARC<\/strong> front and won\u2019t fail authentication. (Which can cause deliverability issues.)<\/p>\n<p>The process here is <strong>complex on our end, but requires no work on your end<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s our way of making sure you can send your large-scale campaigns without any trouble no matter <em>what<\/em>\u00a0type of email address you have and no matter your level of technical expertise.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-happens-under-t-bsdl\">What happens \u201cunder the hood\u201d?<\/h3>\n<p>When GMass replaces your domain, here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>We automatically generate your <strong>personal subdomain<\/strong>\u00a0at gmuser.net\u00a0if you\u2019re using GMass\u2019s SMTP or gmusers.net\u00a0if you\u2019re a Gmail.com user with your own.<\/li>\n<li>We create, publish, and activate a <strong>DKIM key<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>DMARC record<\/strong> for that subdomain.<\/li>\n<li id=\"why-we-created-the-f-zobi\">We <strong>rewrite the From address<\/strong>\u00a0of your campaign\u00a0to that new subdomain so <strong>DKIM aligns with DMARC<\/strong>\u00a0and you pass authentication.<\/li>\n<li>We also force the <strong>Reply-To<\/strong>\u00a0to your original address so <strong>replies land in your normal inbox<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And again, you don\u2019t have to do anything to make any of this happen.<\/p>\n<h2>Why We Created the \u201cFrom Address\u201d Replacement System<\/h2>\n<p>GMass\u2019s From address replacement system serves three main purposes:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Making sure <strong>G<\/strong><strong>mail.com<\/strong><strong> users can send high-volume campaigns using SMTP servers<\/strong>\u00a0without issues.<\/li>\n<li>Making sure <strong>Google Workspace users<\/strong>\u00a0who are non-technical can send campaigns without problems when <strong>using GMass\u2019s in-house server<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Making sure if you send using <strong>email aliases<\/strong>, you don\u2019t accidentally fail authentication.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"for-gmail-com-users-cfsd\">For Gmail.com\u00a0users sending via SMTP<\/h3>\n<p>Originally, we set up the From address replacement system to help a specific subset of GMass users: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/gmail-smtp-dmarc\/\">Free Gmail.com users who were sending large campaigns over SMTP<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With GMass, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/send-unlimited-emails-gmail-using-smtp\/\">break Gmail\u2019s limits<\/a>\u00a0to send thousands (or tens of thousands) of emails a day by sending through a SMTP server.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s impossible for Gmail.com\u00a0users to set up DKIM on their sending domain \u2014 since the sending domain is gmail.com, and Google isn\u2019t going to give you DNS access.<\/p>\n<p>That also means it\u2019s <strong>impossible for those users to achieve DKIM\/DMARC alignment<\/strong>. And when Google and Yahoo rolled out their new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/gmail-bulk-sender-guidelines\/\">bulk sender rules<\/a>\u00a0in early 2024 <strong>requiring<\/strong>\u00a0high-volume senders to have a DKIM record and pass DMARC, we needed a fix.<\/p>\n<p>So in those cases, we automatically replace the sending address (youraddress@gmail.com) with our sending domain (youraddress@youraddress.gmuser.net or youraddress@youraddress.gmusers.net).<\/p>\n<p>We set up DKIM and DMARC for that sending subdomain we\u2019ve created for you, so <strong>your campaigns will achieve alignment and pass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25784\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified.png\" alt=\"GMass automatically creates a DKIM record\" width=\"2004\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified.png 2004w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-1024x398.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-768x298.png 768w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-1536x596.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-24x9.png 24w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-36x14.png 36w, https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fromaddressreplace_autodkim-tinified-48x19.png 48w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2004px) 100vw, 2004px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s good for deliverability, it keeps you compliant with the big email providers, and it doesn\u2019t require any extra steps on your end.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"for-google-workspace-piie\">For Google Workspace users using GMass\u2019s SMTP server<\/h3>\n<p>Soon after we created the From address replacement system for Gmail.com\u00a0senders, we found another key situation to employ it: For our Google Workspace users who <strong>didn\u2019t have DKIM<\/strong>\u00a0set up on their domain and <strong>wanted to send high-volume campaigns <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/use-our-smtp-server\/\">using GMass\u2019s SMTP server<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(GMass has an in-house SMTP server for opt-in campaigns. GMass users can ask to push a single large campaign through that server, or apply in advance to be able to use that server on an ongoing basis.)<\/p>\n<p>If you use your own domain with Google Workspace and GMass (e.g., you@yourdomain.com) and you haven\u2019t set up DKIM or DMARC, you\u2019ll fail the authentication checks.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve found that <strong>less technical users don\u2019t want to set that up<\/strong>\u00a0(it requires editing DNS records) \u2014 <strong>or don\u2019t even <\/strong><em><strong>know<\/strong><\/em><strong>\u00a0about setting it up<\/strong>. Also, some folks don\u2019t have access to their domain\u2019s records, if, for example, it\u2019s your company\u2019s domain.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re sending over your own third-party SMTP server, skipping DKIM is your prerogative. It\u2019s not recommended \u2014 and we even have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/dkim-settings\/\">guide to setting up DKIM through GMass<\/a>\u00a0to help you \u2014 but again, it\u2019s your responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>However, when you use GMass\u2019s in-house SMTP server, we\u2019re extra protective of its deliverability for you and all users. <strong>That\u2019s why we\u2019re more stringent about DKIM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So we would be forced to reject people who applied to use our SMTP server (either to push out a single campaign or use it long-term) if they didn\u2019t have DKIM set up. <strong>This was brutal for non-technical users and not the experience we wanted to provide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This became an even more common situation once we introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/instant-smtp-approval\/\">instant sending server approvals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So now, in these cases, we can also use the From address replacement to help you pass authentication.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"for-anyone-using-ema-gyoc\">For anyone using email aliases<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a third case where we also use the From address replacement system, and that\u2019s for senders using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/gmail-alias\/\">aliases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong id=\"how-from-addresses-a-cyav\">If we can\u2019t confirm the alias address has DKIM set up<\/strong>\u00a0(often if it\u2019s a gmail.com\u00a0alias), we\u2019ll use replacement. Most won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>And for Gmail senders, the domain may even be a credibility <em>boost<\/em>, since you\u2019re no longer outwardly sending with a free gmail.com\u00a0address.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-replies-work-genq\">How replies work<\/h3>\n<p>GMass <strong>forces <\/strong><strong>Reply-To<\/strong>\u00a0to your original email address or your alias (unless <strong>you<\/strong>\u00a0intentionally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/reply-to-address\/\">set a different Reply-To<\/a>\u00a0in the campaign).<\/p>\n<p>That way, replies will land in your regular Gmail inbox and you can correspond from there.<\/p>\n<p>In the rare case that a mailbox ignores the Reply-To, GMass will route emails that go to your replacement address to your inbox.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-bounces-work-kzua\">How bounces work<\/h3>\n<p><strong id=\"how-to-turn-on-off-t-qhzr\">Bounce notifications will go to your replacement address<\/strong>. Our server automatically <strong>forwards<\/strong>\u00a0them to your inbox and logs them.<\/p>\n<p>GMass\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/features\/bounce-management\">bounce management<\/a>\u00a0still applies \u2014 in the future, if you try to email those addresses, GMass will automatically suppress those messages.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Turn On\/Off the \u201cFrom Address\u201d Replacement System<\/h2>\n<p>The From address replacement system is designed to help your deliverability and do so with the least friction possible.<\/p>\n<p>However, we know some people might not want it. So here\u2019s what you can do if you want to turn it on.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"why-you-might-want-t-azlo\">Why you might want to turn on (or leave on) From address replacement<\/h3>\n<p>We will <strong>automatically use From address replacement if your situation requires it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can optionally turn the setting off. GMass will then use From address replacement in all applicable scenarios.<\/p>\n<p>To turn this setting <strong>off<\/strong>, uncheck the box. GMass will still use From address replacement in mandatory situations, but will otherwise not replace your address.<\/p>\n<p>Do note that you\u2019ll fail DMARC in those situations. That <em>might<\/em>\u00a0not be an issue, but <strong>it can lead to deliverability problems<\/strong>\u00a0(and, if you\u2019re a bulk sender, it will violate the Google\/Yahoo policies).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"when-gmass-will-over-cxws\">When GMass will overrule your setting<\/h3>\n<p>Our goal is to respect your choice here on whether or not to use From address replacement.<\/p>\n<p>So we won\u2019t force it on if you\u2019ve turned it off, with one exception: If you <strong id=\"when-is-from-address-qacl\">request to push a single campaign through GMass\u2019s SMTP server and don\u2019t have DKIM set up<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>When Is \u201cFrom Address\u201d Replacement Automatically Turned On?<\/h2>\n<p>Here are the situations when From address replacement will <em>automatically<\/em>\u00a0happen (or not).<\/p>\n<p>In all scenarios, these automatic cases ensure you <strong>pass DKIM\/DMARC<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But after reading through this, I think you\u2019ll see it\u2019s probably the easiest move just to set up DKIM if you can.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"for-gmail-com-sender-eljr\">For Gmail.com\u00a0senders<\/h3>\n<p><strong>From address replacement automatically happens when you send via a SMTP server<\/strong>, whether it\u2019s your own server or GMass\u2019s in-house server.<\/p>\n<p>(You can generally override this by turning off a setting in the GMass dashboard, as I discussed earlier. However, we do recommend using it.)<\/p>\n<p>Using our replacement is the only way for you to pass DMARC.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-for-gmail-nnns\">Scenarios for Gmail.com\u00a0senders<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you send using GMass\u2019s SMTP, From replacement is automatically turned on and used. This cannot be overruled.<\/li>\n<li>If you send using your own SMTP server, From replacement is automatically turned on and used. This cannot be overruled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"for-google-workspace-tbgb\">For Google Workspace senders<\/h3>\n<p>If <strong>you\u2019re using our SMTP server and don\u2019t have DKIM set up<\/strong>, we\u2019ll automatically use From address replacement. (Though you can toggle this off in the dashboard.)<\/p>\n<p>Often, this is good news: If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/use-our-smtp-server\/\">apply to use our in-house SMTP server<\/a>, this means we no longer have to reject you over authentication issues.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-for-google-rbse\">Scenarios for Google Workspace senders (with no DKIM record) looking to push a single campaign through GMass\u2019s SMTP<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you have no DMARC policy or one set to p=none, and you\u2019re not a bulk sender, you have the option to use From address replacement or send through the original address (even without DKIM).<\/li>\n<li>If you have a DMARC policy set to p=quarantine or p=reject, From address replacement will be automatic. (Or you can set up DKIM and send via your regular address.)<\/li>\n<li>If you are a bulk sender, From address replacement will be automatic. (Or you can set up DKIM and send via your regular address.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-for-google-tqxx\">Scenarios for Google Workspace senders (with no DKIM record) looking to use GMass\u2019s SMTP server long-term<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>From address replacement is automatic until you set up DKIM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"for-senders-using-fr-smoc\">For senders using From aliases<\/h3>\n<p>The last automatic scenario: <strong>If you have From aliases connected in Gmail, since we can\u2019t guarantee those aliases have DKIM set up<\/strong>, we\u2019ll may use the replacement.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve set up DKIM for your aliases and GMass can detect it, we won\u2019t use From address replacement.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-with-alias-xtau\">Scenarios with aliases for Gmail.com\u00a0accounts with GMass\u2019s SMTP<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use another Gmail alias, From address replacement is automatic.<\/li>\n<li>If you use an alias with DKIM set up, the From address is not replaced.<\/li>\n<li>If you use a non-free Gmail alias and it has no DMARC or a policy of p=none, you can send using From replacement or with the original address.<\/li>\n<li>If you use a non-free Gmail alias and it has a DMARC policy of p=quarantine or p=reject, you can send using From replacement or with the original address.<\/li>\n<li>If you use a non-free Gmail alias to push a single campaign through GMass\u2019s SMTP and you\u2019re a bulk sender, you can use From replacement or the original address.<\/li>\n<li>If you use a non-free Gmail alias and are using GMass\u2019s SMTP long-term, your From address will be replaced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-for-aliase-oqjx\">Scenarios for aliases with Gmail.com\u00a0accounts and third-party SMTP servers<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use a non-Gmail alias to send through your own third-party SMTP, your address will not be replaced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-with-alias-zacg\">Scenarios with aliases for Workspace users with GMass\u2019s SMTP<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use a gmail.com\u00a0address as an alias, From address replacement is used.<\/li>\n<li>If you use a non-free Gmail alias that does not have DKIM set up, From address replacement will be used.<\/li>\n<li>If you use an alias that\u2019s not a free gmail.com\u00a0account, and it has DKIM set up, From address replacement will not be used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"scenarios-with-alias-wckq\">Scenarios with aliases for Workspace users with third-party SMTP servers<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>If you use a gmail.com\u00a0address as an alias, From address replacement is used.<\/li>\n<li>If you use an alias that\u2019s not a free gmail.com\u00a0address, From address replacement is not used.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, when it comes to aliases and all these permutations, <strong id=\"preventing-gmass-fro-kavp\">it really just makes more sense to take the five minutes to set up DKIM<\/strong>\u00a0if you\u2019re using your own domain and have the option to do so.<\/p>\n<h2>Preventing GMass From Replacing Your From Address<\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t want GMass to replace your from address?<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you can do.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-turn-off-from-addr-ejqe\">#1. Turn off From address replacement in the dashboard<\/h3>\n<p>As I described earlier, you can turn off From address replacement in the dashboard.<\/p>\n<p>BUT\u2026 <strong>there are still scenarios I laid out where we have to override that and replace it anyway<\/strong>. And when we don\u2019t, you\u2019ll fail DMARC.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s an inelegant and incomplete solution.<\/p>\n<p>Which is why the real answer is\u2026<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-set-up-dkim-uqqz\">#2. Set up DKIM<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re on Google Workspace, <strong>it\u2019s as simple as setting up DKIM and DMARC for your domain<\/strong>.
