This is true at GMass and every single other email sending provider.<\/p>\n<p>Anytime someone opens your email, <strong>that pixel loads which lets us know there\u2019s been an open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s possible for YOU to trigger the pixel in an email you\u2019ve sent, so you\u2019re accidentally the one recording those opens.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"why-self-opens-happe-cxfu\">Why self-opens happen (and why they\u2019re so hard to avoid)<\/h3>\n<p>Open tracking is a simplistic but effective mechanism: load an invisible image, record an open.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is <strong>your email client doesn\u2019t care who\u2019s doing the loading<\/strong>. An open is an open.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, most email sending platforms show you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/inflated-open-rates\/\">inflated open rates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At GMass, we have various measures in place to prevent false opens<\/strong>, like our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/products\/tracker-blocker\">Tracker Blocker extension<\/a>\u00a0(a companion Chrome extension which prevents you from triggering your own open pixels) and removing the open pixels from bounce notifications.<\/p>\n<p>But\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Tracker Blocker only works inside Gmail, in Chrome, on your desktop. Once you go elsewhere \u2014 Apple Mail, mobile Gmail, Outlook, any mail app on your phone \u2014 <strong>there\u2019s nothing to stop the pixel from firing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And we know lots of senders regularly open campaign emails in their Sent folder to double-check what they wrote, grab a link, or confirm a detail. On mobile, <strong>every single one of those gets logged as an open<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/othardening-otinsent.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/othardening-otinsent.png\" alt=\"The open tracking pixel triggered by viewing a message in the Sent folder\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1814\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the ways you can end up with inflated open rates.<\/p>\n<p>With a large-scale campaign, these false opens are generally smoothed out by real data.<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re sending smaller campaigns where one or two false opens distort the story or you\u2019re relying on open rate accuracy for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/ab-test\/\">A\/B testing<\/a>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/auto-follow-up-emails-until-reply\/\">sequencing<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 in those cases, <strong id=\"how-open-tracking-ha-azzd\">false opens can be quite damaging<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>How Open Tracking Hardening Works<\/h2>\n<p>Open tracking hardening is a process we use to <strong>strip out the open pixels in your Sent folder so you won\u2019t inadvertently trigger an open as you review messages you\u2019ve sent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"the-process-of-repla-znsc\">The process of replacing your open pixels<\/h3>\n<p>GMass still <strong>sends your emails normally<\/strong>, with the real open-tracking pixel embedded for each recipient. That pixel is not affected in any way during this process.<\/p>\n<p>Then <strong>GMass does a behind-the-scenes shuffle<\/strong>\u00a0with the copies of those emails in your Gmail Sent folder:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>It pulls the sent copy of your message from Gmail using the Gmail API.<\/li>\n<li>It deletes that original sent message.<\/li>\n<li>It inserts a new, identical-looking sent message in your Sent folder \u2014 except this copy has a dummy pixel that can\u2019t trigger an open.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Your recipients get the real thing and has no idea <em>any<\/em>\u00a0of this has happened. Your Sent folder gets the safe version. And you can tap that message on your phone, in third-party email clients, or anywhere else <strong>without corrupting your <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/reports\/\">campaign analytics<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"important-this-proce-axlk\">Important: This process will slow down your sending speed<\/h3>\n<p>To use open tracking hardening, every single message in a campaign requires:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A standard Gmail API send\u2026<\/li>\n<li>A fetch of the sent message\u2026<\/li>\n<li>A delete\u2026<\/li>\n<li>And a fresh insert.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s several API calls per email, and because of that intensive Gmail API choreography, turning this feature on slows sending to <strong>roughly one email every four seconds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s before any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/mail-merge-feature-throttle-your-email-campaign\/\">throttling settings<\/a>\u00a0you might have configured to intentionally add pauses between your messages.<\/p>\n<p>For campaigns under 500 recipients, this slowdown shouldn\u2019t matter; <strong>you\u2019re trading maybe a few extra minutes for improved open-rate accuracy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But above that scale, that may create a bottleneck and make your campaigns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/workflows\/speed-up-slow-campaign\">take a lot longer to send than you\u2019re expecting<\/a>. (Plus, with large campaigns, <strong id=\"who-should-use-open-ebtd\">a few false self-opens aren\u2019t quite as problematic<\/strong> as they\u2019d be with smaller campaigns.)<\/p>\n<h2>Who Should Use Open Tracking Hardening<\/h2>\n<p>This feature is <strong>primarily built for low-volume, accuracy-focused senders<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Campaigns <strong>under ~500 recipients<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone who checks sent emails on their phone.<\/li>\n<li>Anyone relying on open rate for a crucial task like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/ab-test\/\">A\/B testing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/auto-follow-up-emails-until-reply\/\">follow-up sequences that stop on open<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/triggered-emails\/\">triggered emails<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>People sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/uses\/pr-campaigns\">PR pitches<\/a>, investor updates, job outreach, partnership requests where one fake \u201copen\u201d can mislead you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>If your work depends on knowing exactly who opened and when<\/strong>, hardening is one of the only ways to eliminate an insidious source of false opens.<\/p>\n<h4>The situation where it still won&#8217;t catch an open pixel<\/h4>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say someone replies to your campaign and you open that thread in the Sent folder. The reply is threaded to the replaced email in the Sent folder.<\/p>\n<p>However, the pixel will still fire from the email below the reply (aka the email the person opened and replied to) since that&#8217;s included in the thread.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0<em>probably<\/em> shouldn&#8217;t matter for your analytics \u2014 after all, for that person to reply, they had to open the email for real. And we don&#8217;t count repeat opens toward your open rate \u2014 just the original, real open.<\/p>\n<p>Just know that in this case, you <em>will<\/em> trigger an additional open that open tracking hardening won&#8217;t block.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"why-you-might-not-wa-lcqz\">Why you might not want to use it<\/h3>\n<p>If speed matters, this isn\u2019t for you.<\/p>\n<p>For high-volume campaigns, time-sensitive blasts, event reminders, or promos with short windows \u2014 you\u2019ll feel the slowdown.<\/p>\n<p>In those cases, <strong>Tracker Blocker on desktop plus disciplined behavior<\/strong>\u00a0around sent messages may be enough.<\/p>\n<p>If you <strong>almost never open sent emails<\/strong>, or you already rely heavily on Tracker Blocker and rarely check email outside desktop Gmail, you may not need this at all.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, <strong id=\"how-to-turn-on-open-mlvn\">if you\u2019re someone who <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/workflows\/disable-all-tracking\">turns off open tracking<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(like many folks in cold outreach), this feature won\u2019t matter to you.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Turn On Open Tracking Hardening<\/h2>\n<p>Open tracking hardening is an <strong>account-level setting<\/strong>, not one you choose on a campaign-by-campaign basis. That means once it\u2019s on, it will apply to all future campaigns. If needed, grant GMass the required permissions (GMass needs <strong>delete access<\/strong>\u00a0in Gmail, which we otherwise don\u2019t ask for; obviously don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re not going to use this permission for anything except these pixel replacements).<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/othardening-permissions.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/othardening-permissions.png\" alt=\"Grant GMass the necessary permissions\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1096\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve granted those permissions, open tracking hardening is ON for your account and the tracking pixel will be replaced in your Sent folder.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the result. I sent a GMass campaign to one of my other addresses with open tracking on.
