{"id":26102,"date":"2026-02-19T06:47:24","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T06:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/?p=26102"},"modified":"2026-02-19T06:47:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T06:47:24","slug":"personalized-time-zone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/personalized-time-zone\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Send a GMass Campaign in Each Recipient&#8217;s Time Zone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most common questions we get at GMass is: <strong>Can I send a campaign where the emails go out to my recipients in their own time zone?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After all, it\u2019s nice and easy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/time-zones\/\">send a campaign in <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/time-zones\/\">your<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/time-zones\/\">\u00a0time zone<\/a>\u00a0(or <strong>one<\/strong>\u00a0specific time zone you prefer). What about the recipients\u2019 time zones?<\/p>\n<p>First the bad news: There\u2019s no native way to do this, mainly because there\u2019s no reliable way to figure out someone\u2019s time zone until they\u2019ve emailed you (then their date header tells the story).<\/p>\n<p>Now the good news: If you\u2019ve done any <strong>location-based enrichment<\/strong>\u00a0on your contacts and\/or you actually <em>know<\/em>\u00a0their time zone, then yes, you can use the instructions in this article to send to them based on that time zone.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m going to walk you through the <strong>step-by-step process for emailing your recipients using personalized send times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The process might seem a little tricky on paper \u2014 and it isn\u2019t exactly super short \u2014 but it\u2019s mostly cut-and-paste. So don\u2019t be intimidated by things like \u201cApps Script\u201d and more advanced GMass techniques like filtering and recurrence. Those systems are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>GMass<\/li>\n<li id=\"setting-the-time-zon-ztpw\">Google Sheets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m going to go with my home time zone, Pacific, for my examples.<\/p>\n<h3>Setting the time zone in GMass<\/h3>\n<p>The first place we want to set up the base time zone is GMass.<\/p>\n<p>Head to your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/dashboard-guide\/\">GMass dashboard<\/a>, open the <strong>Settings <\/strong>(that\u2019s the gear icon in the top right), and go to the <strong>Time Zone<\/strong>\u00a0section. Choose your desired base time zone there. (Again, for these examples I\u2019ve picked my personal base timezone of U.S. Pacific. You can pick whatever you want.)<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-setzonegmass.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-setzonegmass.png\" alt=\"Set up your base time zone in the GMass dashboard\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1182\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Click the <strong id=\"step-2-preparing-you-pxmo\">Save time zone setting<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>Then you can exit the GMass dashboard.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Preparing your Google Sheet of Contacts<\/h2>\n<p>Now we\u2019re going to set up your Google Sheet.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/format-google-sheet\/\">Prepare your Google Sheet<\/a><\/strong><strong id=\"setting-the-google-s-wnyr\">\u00a0of contacts for your campaign as you normally would<\/strong>. And then we\u2019ll do a few extra things\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Setting the Google Sheet time zone<\/h3>\n<p>First, let\u2019s set the proper time zone in your Google Sheet.<\/p>\n<p>In Sheets, go to <strong>File<\/strong>\u00a0&gt; <strong>Settings<\/strong>\u00a0and choose your time zone from the dropdown box. Match the time zone you chose in GMass.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-sheetstimezone.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-1\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-sheetstimezone.png\" alt=\"Set the base time zone in your Google Sheet\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1118\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Click the <strong id=\"adding-time-zone-inf-eguh\">Save settings<\/strong>\u00a0button to lock in the time zone.<\/p>\n<h3>Adding time zone info to your Google Sheet<\/h3>\n<p>We\u2019re going to add three extra columns to our Google Sheet called <strong>SendDate<\/strong>, <strong>TimeZone<\/strong>, and <strong>IsReady<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u26a0\ufe0f<em>Important: Make sure you use those EXACT names in row 1 of your Google Sheet, including the capitalization, with no spaces before or after. The script we\u2019ll use later is looking for columns with those exact headers.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-newcolumns.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-2\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-newcolumns.png\" alt=\"Add 3 columns to your Google Sheet\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1112\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h4 id=\"senddate-knpa\">SendDate<\/h4>\n<p><strong>SendDate <\/strong>is the date and time we want to send to each individual.<\/p>\n<p>Since I don\u2019t want you to have to do mental math, <strong>this is the date\/time for the recipient<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 so if you put 9 AM here, their email will go out at 9 AM in their own time zone.<\/p>\n<p>(Yes, even though we set the Google Sheet\u2019s timezone so Sheets is \u201cadding\u201d that timezone to this date\/time, our process will eventually strip that out and use the individual time zone you specify in the TimeZone column.)<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"timezone-swwx\">TimeZone<\/h4>\n<p><strong>TimeZone<\/strong>\u00a0is each recipient\u2019s timezone in IANA format.<\/p>\n<p>I debated a LOT over the most user-friendly way to handle time zones and I picked this \u2014 because I find that offsets (like +8:00 and such) are even more confusing. Also, the IANA formats can handle daylight saving time switches.<\/p>\n<p>Enter the IANA timezone string for each recipient in this field. Some common options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>U.S. Eastern &#8211; <code>America\/New_York<\/code><\/li>\n<li>U.S. Central &#8211; <code>America\/Chicago<\/code><\/li>\n<li>U.S. Mountain &#8211; <code>America\/Denver<\/code><\/li>\n<li>U.S. Pacific &#8211; <code>America\/Los_Angeles<\/code><\/li>\n<li>U.K. &#8211; <code>Europe\/London<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Central Europe &#8211; <code>Europe\/Berlin<\/code><\/li>\n<li>India &#8211; <code>Asia\/Kolkata<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Australia Eastern &#8211; <code>Australia\/Sydney<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Japan &#8211; <code>Asia\/Tokyo<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Need to find others? Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_tz_database_time_zones\">Wikipedia\u2019s IANA list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: If you leave the TimeZone column blank, it will default to your Google Sheet\u2019s timezone.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"isready-uxll\">IsReady<\/h4>\n<p><strong id=\"step-3-create-your-g-ueub\">IsReady<\/strong>\u00a0is a column that will automatically fill in with the word \u201cYes\u201d when the recipient\u2019s date\/time happens. Just leave it blank.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"connecting-and-filte-avkd\">Step 3: Create Your GMass Campaign<\/h2>\n<p>Now head over to Gmail to create your GMass campaign.<\/p>\n<h3>Connecting and filtering your Google Sheet<\/h3>\n<p>Click the sheet icon next to the Gmail search bar to connect to your Google Sheet and select it from the dropdown.<\/p>\n<p>Now we need to add a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/send-mail-merge-to-selected-rows-spreadsheet\/\">GMass filter<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0so the campaign only goes out when someone has a \u201cYes\u201d in the <strong>IsReady<\/strong>\u00a0column.<\/p>\n<p>So in the <strong>Filter Rows<\/strong>\u00a0box, type <code>IsReady=Yes<\/code>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-filter.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-3\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-filter.png\" alt=\"Add in a GMass filter\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1271\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Now click the <strong>Connect to Spreadsheet<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<p>If none of your recipient\u2019s send times have occurred yet, it will say \u201c0-recipients\u201d in the alias email address. That\u2019s ok. The campaign will go out to each of them when it\u2019s supposed to.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-0recipients.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-4\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-0recipients.png\" alt=\"Your campaign will have 0 initial recipients\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1271\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"adding-recurrence-to-ilhg\">Adding recurrence to the campaign<\/h3>\n<p>Compose your campaign (including any follow-ups or other settings you want to use).<\/p>\n<p>Then go into the GMass settings and into the <strong>Schedule<\/strong>\u00a0section to set up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/recurring-reminder-emails\/\">recurring campaign<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Check the box next to <strong>Repeat<\/strong>\u00a0and choose <strong>Instantly<\/strong>\u00a0from the \u201cDay\u201d dropdown. And leave the second dropdown as <strong>New<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-repeatinstantly.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-5\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-repeatinstantly.png\" alt=\"Set up recurrence instantly to new rows\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1271\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Once everything else is all set for your campaign, click the <strong>GMass<\/strong>\u00a0button to initiate it.<\/p>\n<p>And then, <strong>copy the Campaign ID<\/strong>\u00a0from the dialogue box that appears.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-campaignid.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-6\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-campaignid.png\" alt=\"Grab the campaign ID\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1270\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>(If you don\u2019t grab the campaign ID from there, <strong id=\"step-4-setting-up-th-pcrh\">you\u2019ll be able to retrieve it in several other places<\/strong>, like the campaign confirmation email GMass sends, the GMass dashboard, or this campaign\u2019s web-based report.)<\/p>\n<h2>Step 4: Setting Up the Google Apps Script<\/h2>\n<p>Now it\u2019s time to <strong>set up a Google Apps Script<\/strong>\u00a0to tie this whole process together.<\/p>\n<p>Head back to your Google Sheet of contacts.<\/p>\n<p>Go to <strong>Extensions<\/strong>\u00a0&gt; <strong>Apps Script<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-extensionsmenu.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-7\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-extensionsmenu.png\" alt=\"Go to Apps Script in the Extensions menu\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1271\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"creating-the-apps-sc-whjx\">Creating the Apps Script<\/h3>\n<p>You can give your Apps Script a name (I named mine \u201cTime Zone Send\u201d; the name is for your reference only).<\/p>\n<p>Then delete the <code>function myFunction () { \u00a0}<\/code> that\u2019s in the window and paste in the following script.<\/p>\n<p class=\"codepen\" style=\"height: 300px; box-sizing: border-box; display: flex; align-items: center; justify-content: center; border: 2px solid; margin: 1em 0; padding: 1em;\" data-height=\"300\" data-default-tab=\"js\" data-slug-hash=\"jErjZyY\" data-pen-title=\"Time Zone Script\" data-user=\"samgmass1\">See the Pen <a href=\"https:\/\/codepen.io\/samgmass1\/pen\/jErjZyY\"><br \/>\nTime Zone Script<\/a> by Sam G (<a href=\"https:\/\/codepen.io\/samgmass1\">@samgmass1<\/a>)<br \/>\non <a href=\"https:\/\/codepen.io\">CodePen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/public.codepenassets.com\/embed\/index.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Now add in your Campaign ID (which you copied in the previous step) into the spot where it says <code>YOUR-ID-GOES-HERE<\/code> and click the <strong>Save<\/strong>\u00a0icon.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-pastecampaignid.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-8\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-pastecampaignid.png\" alt=\"Paste in the campaign ID\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1220\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s what this Apps Script does. It looks through the SendDate column and the TimeZone column, then it compares each of those date\/times to the present date\/time. (Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s accounting for time zone differences.)<\/p>\n<p>If a person\u2019s send date\/time is now or has passed in their time zone, the script updates the <strong id=\"testing-the-apps-scr-jtzi\">IsReady<\/strong>\u00a0column for that person to Yes. And GMass sees that Yes and sends out that recipient\u2019s email.<\/p>\n<h3>Testing the Apps Script<\/h3>\n<p>Now you can test the Apps Script. Hit the <strong>Run<\/strong>\u00a0button in the top bar to test it out. (You may have to give the script some permissions; don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s all safe.)<\/p>\n<p>Assuming we still haven\u2019t gotten to any recipient\u2019s date\/time to send, nothing will happen.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-testrun.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-9\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-testrun.png\" alt=\"Run the script\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1270\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>But look what happens after I added a new row at the end of the spreadsheet with my own email address. I set the date and time to right now\u2026 but I added a few hours and then set the time zone in that column to Eastern time.<\/p>\n<p>Then I ran my script again.<\/p>\n<p>About 30 seconds later (after everything has had time to work through the pipes), <strong>that email went out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-successfultestrun.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-10\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-successfultestrun.png\" alt=\"My example came through\" width=\"1999\" height=\"429\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>That shows me the script is working as intended (it knew that 7:58 PM Eastern time was now).<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"automating-the-apps-hgou\">Automating the Apps Script<\/h3>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to click <strong>Run<\/strong>\u00a0every time you want to process your campaign.<\/p>\n<p>You want the <strong>Apps Script to regularly check to see if we\u2019ve hit someone\u2019s date\/time<\/strong>\u00a0and then add the \u201cYes\u201d to their IsReady column so GMass can send out their email.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the stopwatch icon on the left sidebar in the Apps Script window to bring up the <strong>Triggers<\/strong>\u00a0menu.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-triggersicon.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-11\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-triggersicon.png\" alt=\"Go to the Triggers menu\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1270\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Now click the <strong>+ Add Trigger<\/strong>\u00a0button in the bottom right corner.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-addtrigger.png\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-12\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/sendtimezone-addtrigger.png\" alt=\"Add a trigger button\" width=\"1999\" height=\"1271\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you should select.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Choose which function to run<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; this will be automatically filled in<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choose which deployment should run<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Head<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select event source<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Time-driven<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select type of time based trigger<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Minutes timer<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select minute interval<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Every 10 minutes<\/li>\n<li><strong>Failure notification settings<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Notify me daily<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This means the Apps Script will run every 10 minutes looking for the correct time zone.
