If you’re getting Message not delivered<\/strong>\u00a0bounces from Gmail indicating that your “Send mail as” settings are misconfigured,\u00a0here is why it’s happening and how to resolve it.<\/p>\n

First, this is what this particular type of Gmail bounce message looks like:<\/p>\n

A bounce because your SMTP server is rejecting your From Address.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Here’s another example, indicating that you’ve exceeded your sending limits. Don’t get confused though…this has nothing to do with your Gmail sending limits<\/a>:<\/p>\n

A bounce because your SMTP server is over limit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Why\u00a0are you getting these bounces?<\/h3>\n

In both of these examples, there’s actually no issue with Gmail or GMass. The issue is with the SMTP server that\u00a0you<\/em> set<\/a> when configuring your\u00a0additional From Address<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When you want to send an email in Gmail from an address other<\/em> than your Gmail address, you can do that. You just set up an email\u00a0address that you own as an additional From Address<\/strong> in your Gmail account, and that email address doesn’t have to be a Gmail account<\/strong>, although it can be. You do that by following the instructions provided by Google to add an additional From Address<\/a>. Part of the setup requires<\/strong> you to provide an SMTP server<\/strong> for that new From Address<\/strong>. That means you were forced to input an SMTP server<\/strong>, its username<\/strong>, and its password<\/strong> in order to send “from” that additional address that you own.<\/p>\n

These bounces that you’re receiving are being generated by that SMTP server<\/strong> that you chose — not by Gmail’s server and not by GMass<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In the second example, the SMTP Server bounces the message because of a limit issue. This has nothing to do with Gmail’s sending limits<\/a>. This is a limit imposed by your<\/em> SMTP server that you set when you configured\u00a0the additional From Address.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How do you fix these bounces?<\/h3>\n

Whether you send a normal email with the Gmail Send button or a mail merge<\/a> campaign with the GMass button, if you\u00a0set your alternate From Address<\/strong>, the emails will be sent via that SMTP server<\/strong> that you used to set up that alternate From Address<\/strong>, not Gmail’s servers. You are essentially bypassing Gmail’s sending servers when you send “from” your\u00a0non-Gmail address.<\/p>\n

So when you get a bounce like this, you\u00a0can resolve this by either:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Resolving the issue with the company in charge of that SMTP server<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  2. Sending from your Gmail address rather than the additional From Address<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  3. Usinger a commercial SMTP server like Sendgrid instead of your current SMTP server.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I’m confused…SMTP Server huh?!<\/h3>\n

    You might be confused because GMass allows you to set an SMTP server to send unlimited emails<\/a> with your Gmail account. This is not the same SMTP server<\/strong> that Gmail requires you to specify when you configure an additional From Address.<\/p>\n

    The SMTP server you set with GMass is used to send emails when:<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. You use the GMass button<\/strong> instead of the Gmail Send button…AND…<\/li>\n
    2. You specifically designate the SMTP server to send the emails rather than Gmail’s servers<\/strong> in your GMass Settings:
      \n\"\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      The SMTP server you set with Gmail as part of From Address configuration<\/a> is used when:<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. You choose that particular From Address<\/a> from the dropdown\u00a0menu in the Compose<\/strong> window…AND…<\/li>\n
      2. You use either the Gmail Send<\/strong> button or the GMass button<\/strong>, and if you used the GMass button<\/strong>, you elected to “Send with” Gmail. It might be confusing because even when selecting “Send with” Gmail in this case,\u00a0your emails\u00a0are not<\/em> sent through Gmail’s servers. They’re going through the SMTP server<\/strong> you set as part of your From Address<\/strong> configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
