{"id":365,"date":"2016-03-08T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/?p=365"},"modified":"2023-06-20T19:28:25","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T19:28:25","slug":"set-from-address-gmail-mail-merge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/set-from-address-gmail-mail-merge\/","title":{"rendered":"How to set the From Address for a Gmail mail merge campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can set any <strong>From Address<\/strong> that&#8217;s configured in your Gmail account as the <strong>From Address<\/strong> of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/gmail-mail-merge\">mail merge campaign<\/a> when using GMass. Just select the <strong>From Address<\/strong> you want from the <strong>From dropdown<\/strong> in the <strong>Compose<\/strong> window. If you haven&#8217;t set up an alias <strong>From Address<\/strong> in your Gmail account, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/mail\/answer\/22370?hl=en\">this is how you do it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note that you&#8217;ll need the outbound SMTP credentials of the server for the domain of the new From Address. This also means that emails sent using this alias will route through that external SMTP server and not through Gmail&#8217;s servers.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1497\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1497\" style=\"width: 1194px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Gmail-Set-From-Address.gif\" data-rel=\"lightbox-image-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\" title=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1497 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Gmail-Set-From-Address.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1194\" height=\"710\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Change the From Address of your Gmail message. The From Address you set here will be reflected in your mail merge campaign when using GMass.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>The From Name <em>might<\/em> need to be set separately<\/h3>\n<p>Please see this separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmass.co\/blog\/how-to-set-the-right-from-name-in-your-gmail-email-marketing-campaigns\/\">article on setting the correct From Name<\/a> for your GMass campaigns. If you have <strong>multiple From Addresses configured<\/strong> for your Gmail account, then\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>From Name<\/strong> used for GMass campaigns will <strong>always be what you see in the dropdown<\/strong> in the <strong>Compose<\/strong> window. But if you <strong>don&#8217;t have a From Address dropdown<\/strong>, then the <strong>From Name might be different than you&#8217;d expect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <strong>example above<\/strong>, I do have a <strong>From Address dropdown<\/strong>, so I <strong>don&#8217;t have to do anything additional<\/strong> to ensure the correct <strong>From Name<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>A little history<\/h3>\n<p>In the past, Gmail allowed you to send from an alternate <strong>From Address<\/strong> using <strong>Gmail&#8217;s own servers<\/strong>. Meaning, Gmail didn&#8217;t require you to add SMTP server credentials to set up an alias address. Now, however, they do require this. That change is described <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.stackexchange.com\/questions\/66228\/add-new-alias-to-gmail-without-smtp-forwarding-only-address\">here in this StackExchange article<\/a>\u00a0and this <a href=\"https:\/\/googlesystem.blogspot.com\/2014\/08\/external-addresses-no-longer-use-gmail.html#gsc.tab=0\">unofficial Google\u00a0blog<\/a>. If you happen to have set up an alias <strong>From Address<\/strong> before the <strong>SMTP server requirement<\/strong> was enacted, you are grandfathered in and can send &#8220;from&#8221; this alternate address using Gmail&#8217;s high deliverability email servers.<\/p>\n<p>As far as GMass is concerned, there <em>used to be a bug<\/em> involving switching the <strong>Compose<\/strong> window to a different <strong>From Address<\/strong>, where sometimes changing the <strong>From Address<\/strong> wouldn&#8217;t always be reflected in your mail merge campaign unless you made <em>one more change<\/em> to the <strong>Subject<\/strong> or <strong>Message<\/strong> after setting the <strong>From Address<\/strong>. It would happen because of\u00a0how and when Gmail saves a message that is being worked on. Basically Gmail doesn&#8217;t save the message when a change to the <strong>From Address<\/strong> is made, but now, the library that GMass&#8217;s user interface is based on, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inboxsdk.com\">InboxSDK<\/a>,\u00a0added a new event called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inboxsdk.com\/docs\/#ComposeView\">fromContactChanged<\/a>\u00a0that allows us to\u00a0<strong>trick the Compose window<\/strong> into saving the message after\u00a0a <strong>From Address change<\/strong>. Therefore this bug no longer exists, meaning\u00a0you no longer have to make that additional change after setting the From Address. <strong>So, you can now choose to set the From Address as the very last thing you do before you hit the GMass button.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You can set any From Address that&#8217;s configured in your Gmail account as the From Address of your mail merge campaign when using GMass.
